After some hours spent talking, both men ended up falling asleep. Link on the bed, Rhett on the uncomfortable chair.
The blond man woke up pretty early. The phone showed 6:05am on the screen and as he looked through the window that lead outside, he saw the sun rising. Rhett passed his hand through his hair, feeling even more exhausted than on the day before. He glanced at his still asleep friend, a feeling passed through his body. Maybe Link will wake up and remember. Maybe this was all a dream. Maybe he's alright. He shook his head, knowing that all of that was an obvious lie. He sighed and silently walked out of the room.
The tall man informed one of the nurses that he would be right back and then headed to his car. He drove to a coffee shop that he and Link had a habit to visit at least once per week. The coffee there was amazing and the sandwiches were always fresh and just the way they liked them.
Rhett decided to get Link a good breakfast. The food at the hospital was pretty crap and Link surely needed nutrients. They obviously were in the hospital food, but Link deserved to eat something better. So he parked in front of the small building and quickly walked in.
No one was there as the store just had opened. The employees had a pretty sleepy look on their face, reminding Rhett that he probably looked worse.
- Good morning Mr. Rhett. - a guy with brown hair greeted the tall man as he approached him. He was the one who usually took their requests so they knew each other enough to treat each other by the name.
- Morning, Louis. - Rhett answered to the younger. - It will be the usual. And give me also the cereals you guys sell.
- Sure thing. - the guy smiled and noted the request on the machine in front of him. - Where's Mr. Neal?
- He's... Not feeling very well... - Rhett swallowed, trying to keep his breathing regular.
- Oh my... I hope he feels better soon. Tell him I said hi! - Louis smiled and headed to the shelves that contained the food Rhett requested. - It's very sweet of you to buy him the food. - he added.
Rhett smiled. I'll tell him you said hi but he won't remember you, kid.
It didn't took him long to get the food. Louis nicely packed everything in a paper bag and handed it to the tall man. They said their goodbye's and Rhett went back to his car, heading again to the hospital.
He parked his car on the same spot he did last time, not finding one closer to the entrance. He met Link's doctor at the entrance as she also just arrived to the hospital. She saw the bag in Rhett's hands and sighed.
- There's a microwave at the cafeteria, if you need. - she smiled at the tall man and headed to the elevator. He nodded to himself and searched for it. It wasn't as difficult as he thought and soon he was heading to Link's room.
At one of the corridors, Rhett met with Christy. She had an exhausted look on her face, the bags under her eyes being really noticeable. She said she visited Link and he was really nice this time. Rhett could see she was completely heartbroken but still holding up pretty well.
- You should go home. Rest a bit. Take a shower, have a proper meal. I'll stay here with him. - she asked the tall man.
- I'm fine.
- You're not. - she took his free hand. - Rhett, you need it. You need to rest or you'll be the next one getting admitted in here. And no one wants that.
He bit his lip and sighed, taking a pause to convince himself that everything would be alright on his absence. - Fine. I promise I won't be gone for long.
- Take your time. Jessie is super worried. It will be good for her too. - she squeezed Rhett's hand.
- Okay. I'll just... Give him this. - he raised the bag with breakfast. Christy nodded and gave him a smile, making him smile back.
He got up and finished his way to Link's room.
- Can I? - Rhett asked as he slowly opened the door.
Link's eyes met his and a smile spread on his face. - I thought you ran away or something.
Rhett settled the table that was attached to bed and put it closer to Link as the dark haired man changed into a sitting position, leaning on the white headboard. - I brought you breakfast. - he said, putting on the table the plastic bowl with milk and cereal, the coffee and the sandwich.
- Wait. - Link grabbed Rhett's arm, making the other man look at him. - Are you my guardian angel or something?
- Who knows. - Rhett chuckled and sat on the chair beside the bed, sipping on his own coffee.
- There was a woman here. Christy. Blond hair. She's nice. And pretty. - he raised one of his eyebrows to Rhett in a flirty way, making the other giggle.
- I'm glad you think that. - he answered and took a bite of his sandwich.
Link took a spoon full of cereal to his mouth and carefully chewed on it. - Oh my... I think this is my favorite cereal! Where did you find this heaven? - he spoke and ate another spoon.
It is you favorite cereal. - I have my ways. - Rhett forced a smile. - Listen... I'll have to be absent for a couple of hours... If you don't mind. I'll be back by lunch time.
- We'll that's a shame. - Link pouted. - I'm really enjoying your company here.
Rhett smiled. - I'll make sure to be fast.
- You better be. I don't want to be without my guarding angel for a long time, you know... - Link blinked his eye to the tall man and took the last sips of the milk in the bowl.
Rhett felt his heart beating faster with the words his friends spoke as the smile wouldn't leave his face. - I promise.
