In the land of kings and queens there's not only the obeying to the laws part, but also a lot of fun; at least for the princes and princesses. And that's how it worked for prince Rhett. Wake up in the morning to fall asleep in the middle of a lecture about his future as a king and then spend the whole evening running from one side to another of the castle in search for new adventures, which he almost never found already happening but most of the times made happen. Break a plate and tell the cooks he'd discover who did that or find a mice in one of the rooms and departure in search for more. That's how young Rhett entertained himself when he was younger, though he didn't stop even when he grew.
The pretty 37 years old man to which Rhett grew was unstoppable. His father would only pass him the kingdom when he died, and since he became a father at significantly young age, Rhett knew he still had some years to enjoy as a prince before a big part of his freedom would be taken and replaced with long evenings reading documents and signing deals with another countries to bring only the best for your people.
After spending the entire day outside, Rhett walked into the castle exhausted. He took off his dirty shoes, which would take some good time for the maid to clean, and walked through the long corridors feeling his feet getting colder since the only thing covering them were the white tights that made his legs sweat because it was too hot outside. He passed one of his hands through the walls as his hurting feet took him to one of the libraries of the huge castle. He knocked on the door so lightly that who was inside probably didn't even hear him and then without waiting for an answer, walked in.
His eyes met his father sat behind the desk and his mother beside the window, wagging her colorful and carefully made hand fan in front of her face and neck in attempt to get a little less hot. Both of them gave Rhett a smile as he sat at another chair beside one of the many huge shelves with unbelievable quantities of books. He crossed his legs under himself, trying to find a comfortable position on the chair that was probably too small to get into that position since Rhett was a big man.
- Oh darling, that's your second pair this week! - his mother complained when she saw his white tights painted in brown at the area around his feet.
- Don't worry about that, mother. - he answered and took one of the books from the shelf.
- We have a surprise for you today, James. - his father spoke as he got up from the chair. He slowly walked next to his son and petted his dirty blond hair, making some strings of it fall on Rhett's forehead. - We have visitors today.
- You know I don't like visitors, father. - Rhett shrugged, not even taking his eyes from the book. That was true. Having visitors meant changing clothes, behave at the table and hear all the boring talk.
His father chuckled and pulled his head up by his chin, making Rhett look at him. - It's Charles, Rhett. He's coming to visit.
- Charles Lincoln?! - Rhett's eyes shined as he heard that name.
- Yes son. Charles Lincoln.
Rhett immediately jumped from the chair, letting the book fall on the floor but he didn't even worry with that. - When does he arrive?
- Any minute now.
Rhett didn't even wait for more information. He sprinted out of the library, only stopping at the end of the long corridor, looking through the window that was right above the big entrance door. There were no signs of someone's arrival, so Rhett kept running downstairs where he put on his dirty shoes and left the castle.
Charles Lincoln Neal was a long date friend of his. They knew each other since Rhett remembers his existence on earth. He was lucky enough for their parents being big friends, helping each other's kingdoms since a long time ago and visiting each other quite often. It wasn't until when Lincoln was 17 that his father died, and all the visiting and even contact was lost. Lincoln had many tasks since that moment, the two main of them being to be a good king and battle the sadness that had fallen upon him.
Rhett's parents told Rhett that they'd still maintain relations, but the tall boy saw their friendship being sucked to the bottom of the sea and get lost in the darkness for more than 3 years. Oh such long 3 years during which Rhett passed a lot of time crying himself asleep since Lincoln was the only person with who he was friends.
Yet one day Rhett was finally able to buy out the services of people who delivered letters to other kingdoms. He was smart enough to convince them to not tell a word about that to his father and finally sent his letter to his best friend. He was beyond the clouds when Lincoln sent a letter back and since that moment Rhett was sure he had written more letter to Charles than there were books in the castle as they continued doing it for years. To not let his parents know, Rhett burned most of the papers or just drowned them in the ocean by wrapping them around stones. Yet there was one... One yellow thick paper that lay under one of the planks of the floor in Rhett's room. The one where Lincoln had written an "I love you" in the end and those three words set Rhett's insides on fire. He decided not to talk about that nor acknowledge that it had ever happened at the rest of his letter for Lincoln. But he made sure to read it almost every night, at this point knowing every word and even punctuation used on that paper.
Lincoln had finally come to visit when both of them were 30. Rhett felt like it was the happiest day in his life as his body froze when he saw a tall strong dark haired man that Lincoln had become, walking out from one of the huge ships. He immediately embraced him in what seemed the longest hug ever and didn't leave his side during the entire time Lincoln spent at their castle.
Rhett's parents were happy to see him happy. The tall man grew spoiled and overprotected since he was the only son and successor to throne, so his parents made sure to give him everything he wanted. Though Rhett still didn't understood why they separated him and Lincoln for such a long time. However he also didn't ask too much because he was sure he'd let slip out of his mouth the fact that he and Charles have been writing to each other for such a long time.
The three weeks during which Lincoln had stayed made Rhett feel like he was actually alive. They'd spend every second of the day together, talking about everything possible and go anywhere they wanted. Both of them felt like kids again, just running around and hiding behind trees in the forest, always giving up where they were because they weren't able to hold the laughter.
Yet Rhett obviously noticed that Lincoln didn't change only physically. His mind was different, his actions were different. More mature, more blue blooded and professional. He'd always smile while Charles told him stories about "how it is being a king". Lincoln didn't seem much like that at their letters, but Rhett liked it, and he liked Charles. And Charles surely liked him back...
Now, 7 years later, they'd be together again! Rhett was breathless when he stopped at the entrance of the harbor. He saw big wooden boat approaching, his heart racing even faster with the fact that he knew it was Lincoln's.
The time seemed to slow down while the boat was immobilized and the guards walked out. And then there he was. Charles Lincoln Neal carefully walking out his boat. Next to him Rhett looked like a simple person from the people who lived there, since Lincoln's white tights were as clean as snow, his gold colored shirt covered a part of his upper leg, letting brown shorts peak from under it and his shoes shined, showing that they were either new or just polished. Rhett didn't contain the happiness and ran through the wooden path, almost knocking Charles from his feet as Rhett strongly wrapped his arms around Lincoln's smaller body.
- Hello, brother. - Lincoln's warm breath brushed the back of Rhett's ear.
- Why didn't you tell me you'd come?
- Surprise! - Lincoln chuckled as he looked into his friends eyes. Neither of them could hide their smile.
- Let's go, shall we? - Rhett offered, letting Lincoln go ahead. The other man smiled and wrapped his arm around the taller's shoulders, barely touching the top of them.
