- I'd much more prefer lying on my sofa right now than going somewhere cold and dark. – Link complained as he threw his backpack to the backseat of Rhett's car.
- Hey, Jordan has good intentions. It's sweet of him planning something like that. – Rhett answered. – It's better than sitting on the sofa for the entire day. – he added, giving his friend a teasing look.
- Not. – Lincoln rolled his eyes and put on his seat belt as Rhett started the vehicle.
- You're gonna be a grumpy grandpa. – the blond giggled, slowly pressing on the gas pedal of the car.
- I'm just sayin', Valentine's Day can be happily passed on the sofa of your house with a box of pizza and good intentions.
- Shut up and check where the house is. – Rhett chuckled and gave Link his phone, after that mentioning that Jordan had sent him the address through messages.
They knew Jordan for a while now. Met him at the second year of college and kept contact ever since. A few days ago, the guy called Rhett, asking for a favor about a surprise he was planning for his fiancé.
He owned a house not too far away from where they lived. A present from his parents, or maybe something more like "passing from generation to generation". Not even he was sure. But it passed to be owned by him. Though Jordan never got too interested in it. Just wasn't to his taste. Or his wife's. The two best friends were pretty surprised when he asked for help to bring the house to a better shape.
The plan was for all of them go there together, but Jordan didn't count on the car issues right in the morning. So he asked Rhett and Link to go ahead and he'd later meet them there.
Rhett found Link's grumpiness funny, as he knew that deep down, Lincoln truly cared. Not even deep down. Link cared, truly. He just liked to complain from time to time. Rhett was way too used to that by now. Jordan couldn't lie, he was too. It was a running joke between them to always invite the dark haired for events like that.It had passed almost an hour and a half. Link lazily held Rhett's phone in his hand, while leaning on his other free arm, his eyelids for some reason getting heavy. He had slept well, it was just the car ride. Everything was so silent and the same.
The trees around the swirly road became denser, which made the radio connection be interrupted, the car being silent for at least thirty minutes now. From time to time, Link would instruct Rhett if he should turn on the next exit or not. But that was it. For some reason, the two men didn't talk much, but the silence was comfortable.
The sun was now going down. The light grey clouds covered some parts of the warm orange sky, but still let both men appreciate the nice sunset, which looked even better around green color of the trees spread all over the place.
- Are you sure we're going in the right direction? – Rhett asked after another couple of minutes in silence.
- You're the one driving, you should be the one paying attention to that. – Link answered calmly.
- You're the one who has the map.
- Well... You're the one who's driving! – Lincoln insisted, realizing that in fact, he wasn't paying attention to the map in Rhett's phone.
The falling night slowly crept on him. As the sky became darker and darker and the two men drove without having an arriving point, Link felt a cold sensation inside his body. The desire of being lost in the middle of nowhere was not that big. He glanced over at Rhett. As he expected, the other man was way more relaxed than him. Link shouldn't be scared. He had Rhett. Rhett was good at these things.
On their way to nowhere, they stumbled upon a small village. The houses looked old, almost all of them made of wood. There were just a couple, which wasn't surprising since the place was so isolated in the mountain. Yet even with probably a small amount of people residing there, there was no one on the streets. Though, Link thought, who would be on the street when it's getting dark and this place looks like a perfect scenario for a scary movie.
- Excuse me? – the dark haired heard his best friend say, which made him jump since Lincoln was so deep into the silence. He looked to the side, seeing Rhett's window roll down and an old man approach the car.
Lincoln wasn't much of a judging guy, but that man, once again, seemed like a perfect protagonist for a scary movie. The villain, to be exact. Link prayed he didn't invite them to their house as "you won't be able to get too far since it's getting dark". He knew Rhett would just brush his worries off and accept the offer. The darkness, why did it make everything scarier?!
- You should've turned on the turn that had no sign. – the man explained with a weird accent. Link was sure he had skipped a lot of conversation between Rhett and the guy. He wasn't sure if there being a solution to this made him feel better or worse, also feeling bad for not appreciating the help the old man was giving. He felt anxious.
- Alright thank you so much. – he heard the blond say and close the window. He just now noticed the chill air coming from outside; a shiver running through his entire body and rising the hairs on his arms.
- See, you should've paid more attention. – Rhett said as the car started moving again. The front lights of the vehicle illuminated a good part of the road in front of them, but also made the trees, the bushes, the grass, gain weird creepy shadows.
- Sorry... - he said with a low voice.
- Hey, what's up with you? – the taller looked at him, actually worried at Link's sudden change of tone and actions.
- Just... waiting to be abducted at any minute. – Link confessed with a certain tone of humor but at the same time, half true. As ridiculous as it sounded.
Rhett giggled. – Do you remember that time we found a cabin in the woods? It was snowing like hell. – he continued. Link was intrigued by the giggle. It sounded like he was making fun of him yet, at the same time, Link found comfort in that soft sound. Of course, Rhett's intentions were only good.
And then, the attempt of distracting him from his stupid fear by starting some sort of conversations. Link appreciated that a lot. Though he also clearly remembered that day, and he wasn't sure if that was the most perfect subject.
- Yeah. – he confessed. – We got stuck there for a good while.
- Your leg looked ugly... - Rhett added, lightly chuckling.
- I still have a scar. – the dark haired unconsciously touched his leg right on the place a ridiculously small scar was left from a tree branch almost getting stuck inside his leg. They were such stupid careless kids.
- You were ready to die! – the taller reminded how Link wanted to give up mid-way to the little house he had discovered in the middle of the trees. He was so excited about it that nothing seemed to be able to stop him from showing it to Link.
- I was. – Link confessed, a soft giggle leaving his mouth.
Then there was a little pause, probably as both of them remembered what happened in the small cabin. How Link panicked, how they found a creepy room and settled down there, how their lips seemed to be made for each other, how Rhett haven't kissed anybody with so much love, how Link felt like he could be lost there forever as long as he had Rhett's lips on his.
Both of their parents were extremely mad when the two boys came back at the end of the day. Of course, they were worried and went nuts searching for the two teenagers. Rhett's dad took him home. Link watched him walk away, from the window of his room where he'd spend the rest of the day as a "punishment". Rhett looked back at him. Link wished he would've kissed him goodbye. He blushed.
- I think that's it. – Rhett spoke, making Link look outside. They were getting closer to a wooden house. Pretty big one. Two floors but not in a too good shape. The absolute darkness involving it. The trees didn't help at making the place look cozier. To complete the absolute shivering atmosphere, the sky was full of heavy dark clouds, ready to rain any time now.
Rhett parked in front of what seemed to be a garage. He turned off the car but left the lights on since there was any other source of light around them. The taller took his phone from his pocket and turned on the flashlight.
- How are you not scared? – Lincoln asked him with a quiet voice, following his actions.
Rhett shrugged. – I'm curious. It's like a haunted house.
- Shut up. – Link felt another shiver just from those words.
They walked out of the car. The dark haired immediately got closer to Rhett, grabbing his wrist with his free hand. The warmth coming from the taller man made Link feel a little more comfort.
- He said the key was under the carpet, at the entrance. – Rhett spoke the information Jordan had given him.
Slowly, they went up the small steps that lead to the porch of the house. There, a brown heavy carpet lay in front of the wooden door. Rhett reached down, which caused Link to let go of his wrist. Not safe!
He made a face when Rhett carefully grabbed the border of the carpet and lifted it. A couple of ants went running from under it, trying to hide from the light that shined on them. And there it was, a key. Rhett grabbed it and carefully put the carpet back in place. Honestly, Link actually wanted to get inside the house. Having his back exposed to absolute darkness did not give him a good feeling. In the house, at least he could just sit in a corner and cry.
The blond man slowly opened the door. It made a sound to which both men made a face, looking around as if it had troubled someone else. Of course, there was no one to trouble. As far as they knew... There could be someone in the forest Link thought.
- You gotta be kidding me. – the dark haired complained as the inside of the house was revealed in front of them. The few pieces of furniture were covered with white sheets, the darkness making them seem like fallen asleep ghosts. Rhett said nothing, which made Link look up at him. – See, you're scared too. We should go back to the car and call Jordan. – he almost whispered, as if those ghosts could hear him.
- No, it's fine. – Rhett answered and made a step forward.
- Please don't scare me. – Link asked, his hand securing even strongly into Rhett's wrist.
- What?
- You like scaring people. But please don't scare me. I'd have a heart attack.
Rhett chuckled at Link's small soft scared voice. – You're ruining the creepy atmosphere. – he said with a smile on his face, looking down at Link while the other got even closer to the taller.
- Good to know. – Link answered, not looking back at him. His eyes were wide open, paying attention to everything around him but Rhett.
- Let's try to find some candles or somethin'.
They walked inside what seemed to be the living room. The room hardly illuminated by the darkness coming from outside. Everything was so silent, it was almost scarier than if the room had a sound. There were two, what seemed to be, sofas. A fireplace. Some other stuff covered with a white sheet, but Lincoln tried not to give them attention.
After looking around the living room, they glanced over the door that leads to the kitchen. Except, there was no door, it was just a door frame. Rhett walked in front, Link followed, never letting go of the other man's wrist.
- Look in the drawers. – the blond said.
The smaller tried to push away the thoughts of what kind of bugs would be hidden in those drawers. Keeping his distance, and with only one finger, Link slowly slid open one of them. For his surprise and luck, there was a dusty pack of white candles in it.
- Found 'em. – he said with a sigh, probably in relief.
Rhett looked over at him and then at the candles. – Good job, Link. – he complimented and Link actually felt proud.
A pack of matches revealed itself behind the candles. Another stroke of luck! Link felt a little bit better after the candles were lit. Yes, it still gave that creepy look to everything around him, but the warm orang-y colors made him feel a little bit more comfortable as he leaned against Rhett.
After the candles, both men were happy to see a couple of logs lying beside the fireplace full of ashes. Both agreed on starting a little fire as the air started to get colder and outside, silent drops of rain could be heard.
That task took them a while longer. They didn't have any paper and the matches kept burning out without lighting up the wood. But eventually, they did it. The smoke made both of them cough, but as the fire got bigger, both sat back and sighed. Link sat behind Rhett since he let the taller take control of the fire situation. He held both of their phones, helping Rhett to see better what he was doing.
He crossed his legs and hugged Rhett's body from behind when they turned off the flashlights of their phones and were left to the small fires around them. The dark haired listened to the sounds that Rhett's phone was making when he tried to call Jordan, but not much success.
- No service. – the taller informed, as expected.
Link looked at the window, shivering with the weird shapes the trees were making as the wind made them move. – We're gonna die here, aren't we? It always comes to houses in the woods.
Rhett chuckled, after that lightly shrugging. Link could feel that as his head was leaned against Rhett's back. – At least back in first one we had food. – the blond answered after a probably too long pause. Both realized how hungry they were.
Instead of making a noise, Link's stomach filled up with butterflies. He remembered all the times he and Rhett kissed after that day. But also all the times they both held back from it when the two of them had partners but still desired each other. Everything went back to not ruining the friendship, but their lips ached in need of each other. It all went back to each other.
Rhett heard Link's loud gulp. He sighed and held Link's hands, which were resting at the bottom of his stomach. Such simple light touch that made his breathing get faster.
They stood like that for an unknown amount of time. Rhett watching the fire, Link just feeling his best friend in his arms. He didn't feel scared anymore, as long as he had Rhett there. He felt the blond holding one of his hands and bringing it up, then kissing two of his knuckles. He probably thought Link had fallen asleep. Link bit his lip, trying not to give out how fast his heart was beating, as if it could actually be heard.
They had this talk many time. That nothing good would come out if they kept doing that. It has been years and both of them agreed, dammit!
- I want to kiss you so badly. – the dark haired wasn't able to hold back. He felt Rhett freeze under him.
- Maybe there's food in the kitchen. – Rhett spoke back, knowing how absolutely stupid that statement was. Link didn't protest though. He let go of Rhett's body and stood up. Rhett sighed and followed him.
They took one of the candles with them, putting it on the dining table that stood in the middle of the small kitchen. Link wasn't holding onto him anymore. He stood on the opposite side of the room, head low as he silently looked through some drawers that obviously wouldn't have anything to eat.
His hand tightened around the rusty handle of the fridge beside him. That was the only thing that held him back from rushing over to Link and kiss him passionately, like he'd been wanting to do for a good time now. So, he let go of the handle.
With large steps, the taller walked closer to his best friend. He held Link's waist strongly as he turned the smaller forward to him. His lips came in contact with Link's at the same time he trapped the dark haired between the wall and his own body. And their lips burned against each other with desire. Such good burning!
- Guys?! We're here! I can explain! And I have pizza! – Jordan's voice sounded through the house. It hasn't passed even a second since we kissed Rhett screamed in his head with the terrible timing of their friend! He didn't have enough. He didn't want to let go!
Rhett felt Link's hands softly being place on his chest and applying such light force in the unwanted intention to pull him back. But no! Rhett got closer and kissed him harder. His right hand traveled to Link's neck. His fingers wrapped around it, of course, never with enough strength to cause discomfort to his lover. They wrapped around him with desire, to which Link's let out a low moan coming from the back of his throat and vibrating against Rhett's mouth.
Link felt Rhett's fingers pressing against his jaw. He loved it. Every quick second of it. How strongly Rhett held into him. And he pushed forward, just to feel that hand holding him in place. His tongue brushed against Rhett's lips, but Jordan's voice was now closer and he knew they needed to separate any second now. Rhett did the hard job...
They looked at each other for a moment, before the taller left the room and gave out where they were. He and Jordan started a conversation, but Link couldn't bring himself to listen. He just stood there, leaning against the wall, breathless, still feeling Rhett's strong fingers wrapped around his throat. Link needed him again, and again, and again. He wondered why they kept making stupid promises that never really worked out.
The dark haired brushed his cold fingers against the hot skin of his neck and took a deep breath. All of the sudden this situation didn't seem bad at all and he and Rhett could stay in that cold dusty dark house an entire night without needing someone. Dammit.
- Link? – Jordan called.
- Coming!A/N: This is kinda bleh, I know... Also, the thing referenced here is an old old one shot, one of the first posted in this books, hah.
