Journey to the forest of damnation

October 2, 1999

Numerous disappearances have been reported at a little-known location in eastern Germany, including several American citizens already identified by the government. There are rumors of a place where people supposedly enter, but for some curious twist of fate, no one ever returns to inquire about it. Consequently, I have been assigned the mission of traveling to this location to investigate the events, relying entirely on my skills to complete this challenging task. For this purpose, I will be joined by two other agents from the DPFD team: Bernard Abu-Jamal and Max Allen. I look forward to updating you on our progress.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth Sharrow

Very little information existed about a strange location known among gossipers as Reich der Finsternis, situated between the federal states of Saxony and Thuringia in eastern Germany, in a place to which no known route leads. It has been widely believed that the name is nothing more than a legend, like many others that have arisen in Germanic culture. However, a family of Americans, the Warrens, who were notorious for their constant international plundering, claimed to have stumbled upon this mysterious place.

For years, the veracity of their story was questioned until an exotic statue, purportedly brought from a nearby location, was presented as proof of its existence. Not only did its extravagant material intrigue experts, but also the level of detail and life expressed by the figure. It is said that nothing in even the most renowned Renaissance works conveys similar sensations. Many even claim that it possesses a life of its own.

For over fifty years, the statue was held by the state of Saxony until some merchants planned its transfer to the United States, where it was to be sold and exhibited. However, two days after the news broke, all those involved in its theft and transfer mysteriously disappeared. Along with them, several of their relatives and friends also vanished without a trace. Matters worsened in the days that followed when a wave of murders and disappearances shook much of Europe, especially Germany. Among the most notable victims were two German doctors and a Swedish coroner and his family. The only certainty is that, apart from the Warrens and their mercenaries, no one else had ever claimed so confidently to have entered Reich der Finsternis and lived to tell the tale.

As part of a classified operation, the U.S. government used a contact in Germany to transport the agents assigned to investigate the situation in the affected area. The youngest of them was Elizabeth Sharrow, known to her colleagues as Liz; an attractive twenty-three-year-old agent who was eager for what would likely be her most difficult assignment. Normally, it was her brother Rick who received such assignments due to his reputation in the DPFD, but this time, the agency had placed its trust in her. For Liz, it was the perfect opportunity to prove herself as a capable agent, on par with her brother, though her primary motivation was always her desire to help others.
