[EDITING]
you took a polaroid of us,
then discovered,
the rest of the world was black and white,
but we were in screaming color,
and I remember thinking
are we out of the woods yet?

season 4, episode 3 (part 2)
All I could hear were the sounds of coughing. Violent coughing. Along with the sound of moans and groans in agony, many people lay on the cold floor to get their boiling-hot bodies back to their normal temperature.
My heart ached for the many people who have succumbed to the sickness because I knew they most likely wouldn't get through it alive. But I knew I had to help them, I had to take care of them since Dr. S wasn't able to anymore.
Hershel had to be isolated as well considering he was vulnerable along with the children, if he got sick, there was no chance he would survive. So I decided to be the one to take one for the team– I was already exposed, so I should be able to help, right?
I had helped Glenn into a cell, sadly having to tear Maggie away from him so she wouldn't catch what he had. He was in the early stages of the sickness, but he still looked miserable.
To my knowledge Daryl, Michonne, and a few others were going on a run to look for some medicine, but considering the distance– none of us were really sure when they would be back. Could be late at night, could be early in the morning, could be a few days.
That's why I worked my hardest to make sure everyone was comfortable and they had everything they needed, if they needed comfort, I was there. If they needed water, I was there. If they needed food, I was there.
My feet had never moved so fast in their life, moving from one cell to the next, helping people back onto their beds after they rolled off, helping someone calm down from a panic attack, and more.
For the first time in years, I felt useful. I felt like I was meant to do this, I was meant to help people.
I just wish I had Hershel by my side to watch me.
He always said I was his best assistant.
"Look, I don't blame you for being distracted, I understand. Just please try to get your head in the game, I need my best assistant to help me." Hershel joked with a soft smile, which caused a soft breathy laugh to escape me in response.
"I'll always be the best assistant."
I was sat beside the young girl named Lizzie who had just joined, Glenn also right by my side as we both comforted the young girl. She had a young sister, Mika, who thankfully wasn't exposed to the same illness her sister had.
Yesterday, when everything went down, Lizzie and Mika sadly lost their father– who was attacked by a walker. Thankfully, he had enough time to tell the two girls goodbye, but leaving them to fend for themselves.
Carol graciously took over for him, taking care of the both of them. It was sad to see, knowing that Carol had been suffering the loss of her daughter since I'd known her. But, seeing her with these two kids, brought out a part of her that had been lost so long ago.
