[EDITING]
you took a polaroid of us,
then discovered,
the rest of the world was black and white,
but we were in screaming color,
and I remember thinking
are we out of the woods yet?

"You really think you could take his spot?" Denise asked slowly, her brows raised as she stared at me.
I took a deep breath, using my index finger to push the book page in my hand. "Someone has to. He can't be trusted around patients if he's gonna show up drunk," I scoffed, shaking my head. "And I know I can do it. I'm just not sure Deanna will make it happen,"
Denise leaned back in her chair, a skeptical smile playing on her lips. "You do realize what you're getting into, right? I mean, Pete Anderson doesn't take change lightly, especially if this hardcore-super-tough-ex-veterinarian is trying to take over his job,"
My head slowly raised, and my brows quirked up as I met Denise's gaze. An amused smile grew on my face as I stared at her, slowly lowering my book in my lap. "You kinda talk like my friend Tara," I hummed before returning to my book.
"Your friend Tara? Look, that isn't important, Nola!" Denise groaned, using her feet to scoot her rolling chair near me. "Pete has connections, he has a history here. You should be concerned if Deanna has to 'think about it'. She'd never betray her one-and-only Doctor-Surgeon Pete Anderson,"
I glanced up from my book again, a sigh exiting me as I met her gaze. "Trust me, I know. But I just have to hope she does the right thing. If not... I might have to do somethin' myself," I gulped.
Denise leaned in, her eyes full of curiosity. "And that is...?"
My mouth opened, but my mind went blank, causing an embarrassed smile to grow on my face. "I'm not sure. But soon, I will!" I exclaimed hurriedly, my eyes shifting back to the book in my hands.
The blonde woman raised an eyebrow, clearly unimpressed. "You better figure that out quickly, Nola. 'Cause once you make a move, there's no turning back. Especially on Pete Anderson,"
I snorted, flipping another page in my book before glancing into Denise's blue eyes. "Pete Anderson doesn't scare me," I muttered aloud.
"You've got guts. I'll tell you that. No one ever goes against Pete... and for good reasons," Denise murmured as she shook her head.
Once again, I put down my book, my eyes squinting in confusion. "Why?"
Denise licked her lips, her eyes drifting to the door before turning to me again. "I'm not sure if I should be saying this to you– especially since you're with Rick and he's the constable and then your other friend is also a cons–"
