season 6, episode 5

"The town was overrun. Rick went off by himself to try and gather the rest of the herd. Glenn split off with Nicholas. He has this idea that..." Michonne paused, her tone careful as she spoke to Maggie, Rosita, and me.

"... if he lit a fire, it would stop the walkers from coming here. I tried to go instead. I wanted to. The fire never got lit. We had to keep going... I'm sorry," the woman continued, her sad eyes now completely on Maggie.

I placed a comforting hand on Maggie's back, rubbing it back and forth slowly. The Rhee woman almost looked ill, like she had seen a ghost. But with the fiery glint in her sage green eyes, I knew she still had hope, and so did I.

"He said if he got stuck, he would find a way to send us a signal," Michonne added, her voice wobbling with emotion as she watched Maggie closely.

"A signal?" Maggie repeated.

"Open the gate!" a familiar voice echoed loudly, their voice carrying through the eerily quiet community of Alexandria.

As I heard the familiar masculine voice I froze, my head snapping toward the gate. I turned to the three other women, ensuring I wasn't just hearing anything.

"Open the gate!" the voice of Rick repeated, followed by the sounds of snarling and growling. "Open the gate now!"

Snapping out of my daze I launched myself forward, rushing past Maggie, Michonne, and Rosita as I raced right to the gate, groans leaving me as I quickly opened the gate.

Once I opened the gate I could feel the entirety of my body and my mind shift, my eyes going wide at the sight before me. It was Rick, sweaty, bloody, and dirty sprinting full speed towards us, and behind him were what seemed to be hundreds– maybe thousands– of walkers chasing him.

Thankfully, Michonne and Maggie helped me open the gate, their shocked expressions staring at the sight as well. I held my breath as I watched the love of my life manage to escape the threatening hands of the flesh-eating-beasts that surrounded him, his glassy eyes on mine as he sprinted only faster.

As soon as Rick crossed the threshold, his body nearly slammed into mine, my arms immediately wrapping around his shoulders as I gasped in relief. Everyone managed to close the gate as soon as Rick landed in my arms, his ragged breathing all I could hear as I held him tight.

His chest heaved against mine, the adrenaline from his escape still coursing through him. I could feel the heat radiating off of his body, and I tightened my grip, unwilling to let him go. The sound of walkers clawing at the gate faded to the back of my mind as I focused on the man in front of me.
