Sam appears in the first story. In this story, Nole and Sam have to make a film for their film class. They decide to make a horror film about an animatronic. They create the blackbird for this film. The premise is that the bird makes people confess their wrongdoings. Sam decides it would be fun to say each other's wrongdoings. Nole says the worst thing he's done was bully a girl in middle school. He finds it hilarious, but Sam doesn't find it as funny. When Sam was younger, he was bullied so he gets mad at Nole for being a former bully. Later that night, his friend, Amber, calls him saying Sam might've been hit by a train. When he gets to the scene of the crime, black feathers from the blackbird costume Sam had was there, along with a smear of blood. Nole thinks Sam might actually have gotten hit. Later on, the blackbird keeps stalking him. He begins to theorize it's Sam as some ghost wearing the costume. Similar to Ella and Ballora, the Blackbird follows Nole everywhere he goes and won't leave him alone. Nole eventually realizes he has to right his wrongs. So he tracks down the girl he bullied in middle school, goes to her college and apologizes to her. After this, the blackbird is gone and Sam returns, turns out he wasn't hit, he nearly dodged the train but got injured. Also, Sam forgives Nole for what he said and admits to him that when he got bullied, he threw rocks into their house, and that's his crime.

Sam appears in the epilogue for this book in one of Larson's visions. Larson sees Sam on the train tracks and Eleanor makes him dizzy so that he loses his balance, causing him to nearly get hit by a train, but Larson pushes him out of the way. It is revealed the reason Sam survived is because Larson pushed him...it's a little confusing and causes a time paradox but whatever.
