Short Bio:

Joel is either fresh out of high school, or about to graduate, it's never said. But he works at where his dad works and he doesn't like it there. He is usually annoyed of the way his parents are and wishes to leave to LA to become a musician. Joel mostly only cares about himself though.

Joel appears in the second story of this book. In the beginning, we are just shown Joel's typical daily life. One day he accidentally hits a Kids at Play sign and leaves it. Later that night, he is driving and a kid is on the road, he tries to hit the brakes, but his truck hits the kid and throws him into a ditch. Joel gets scared about this wondering if he's ok, but he decides not to check it out because he could get in trouble so he just goes home. The next day, he wants to check out the ditch to see if the kid is there, but his dad takes him to work. While on their way there, they get donuts and Joel gets out to get them. There, he speaks with Sally who says her grandson went missing, Joel tries to tell himself it's not the same kid, but it's a small town so it likely is him. It turns out the whole town is now looking for this kid, and Joel gets freaked out about it. He still decides he will say nothing about it. Throughout the book, Joel just keeps seeing the Kids at Play signs all over the town, even in places they weren't in before. Now, he goes home and goes to sleep. He wakes up at 2AM, and he gets up, but he doesn't know why he gets up. He is not in control of his body. He ends up back where he hit the kid and he starts coming apart. His eyes fall out, his skin peels off, etc. eventually, he transforms into the kids at play sign himself, and is left there.
