That Sunday I was sitting with Minerva and Pomona in the staff lounge having tea as Minerva placed a hand on mine. "Albus and I... we never should've pushed you toward Severus." Her eyes filled with tears. "We didn't know he was... capable of something like this."
"You didn't push me to do anything, Minnie," I assured her, squeezing her hand gently. "I made my choice... no one forced me to. I suppose I just saw the good in him."
"There's no good in that man... not anymore." She shook her head sadly.
I swallowed the protests that were threatening to spill from my lips, settling on a gentler approach. "Perhaps there's more to the story."
She furrowed her brow. "Are you... are you defending him?"
I shook my head furiously, realizing my mistake. "No, never. I just... perhaps Albus knew something we didn't... in order to trust him so completely."
Before she could say anything more Amycus and Alecto entered the room.
"I thought the rule was that gatherings of three or more were prohibited," Alecto sneered, her eyes flashing between Minerva, Pomona, and I.
I leaned back on the sofa, a smirk spreading on my face. "You gonna report me?" I titled my head. "Go ahead. I'd like to see how this goes."
Alecto swallowed thickly. "Perhaps nothing will be done about your behavior but as for them," Amycus said, pointing to Pomona and Minerva. "They'll be dealt with."
I scoffed. "I don't think you want to do that." I crossed my arms over my chest, hoping to hide the shaking I felt in my hands.
"And why's that?" Alecto hissed.
"It's hard to run a school when all the professors are dead," I chuckled.
"We don't need to kill to get our point across," Alecto replied, pulling her wand from her robes. I quickly stood as Minerva and Pomona's eyes widened and they stood. I moved in front of them and Alecto smirked.
"Protective, aren't we?"
"You'd do the same if I threatened your family," I hissed, pointing to Amycus. "Should I test that theory?" I drew my wand and Alecto shouted a disarming charm, but I deflected it.
Amycus's eyes filled with horror as he stopped his sister, muttering to her. "Don't, Alecto. She calls the shots here."
Alecto huffed in annoyance but lowered her wand nonetheless.
"The gatherings of three or more rule doesn't apply to staff, dears. Especially not those of us who have proven our loyalty."
"Have you?" Alecto sneered before turning to Pomona and Minerva. "Have they?"
"They've proven their loyalty to me," I hissed lowly. "And thereby proven their loyalty to him. They've stayed in this shithole even as the man who killed his predecessor now runs the school. Surely that is enough loyalty for you. It seems to be enough for him and it's definitely enough for me."
Alecto scoffed. "Loyalty? Or fear?"
"These days they seem to be one in the same." I paused for a moment. "You would question him? You would question me, his daughter?"
"N-no. Of course not, my Lady," Amycus replied, nudging his sister with his elbow.
"Of course not, my Lady."
They looked down as a silence filled the room and I scoffed. "You two are pathetic. Now get out of my sight and don't let me catch you threatening them again."
