Now that the cat was out of the bag I was waiting for the claws.
"You're married to Valentino Guerrero?" Abuela asked, her face expressionless.
"Yes," I fearlessly replied. "Since the fifth of May this year. And I'm also a part of the Sangue Mafia. I found out about Father's involvement with the Mafia as well."Abuela nodded and turned to Mom. "You told her?"
"No she found out on her own," Mom said.
"I see. Well there'll be plenty of time to discuss this... unexpected turn of events. In the meantime come inside and have something cold to drink."Well, that went better than I expected.
As we took our seats in the expansive, tastefully done living room Abuela told the maids to bring a tray of lemonade. The weather was hot outside but the sliding door which led to the backyard was left open, allowing the cool breeze to drift inside.
"Before we say anything else Abuela I'd like you to meet my sister-in-law Sabrina," I said in an attempt to break the iceberg.
"It's a pleasure to meet you Mrs Petrova, Jasmine's told me so much about you," Sabrina smiled.
"The pleasure is all mine my dear," Abuela nodded. "I see you are carrying Damen's child. My congratulations."
"Thank you. It's a girl. Her name is Gia."
"A very lovely name it is.""So how have you been Sierra?" Dad asked.
"I've been well Luciano," she replied. "And you? It's been what, four, five years since we've last seen each other?"
"Indeed. How is Carlos?"
"He's growing older with each passing year but he still feels as though he's a young man. He insists on taking part in the family business despite my telling him that Miguel, Enrique and the other men are here to take care of things."The maids arrived with the lemonade and we all took a glass. As soon as the ice cold liquid sloshed down my throat I instantly felt cool again. Setting down my glass I cleared my throat. "So Abuela, is there anything you'd like to ask me?"
Setting down her own glass Abuela straightened up against the couch. "For starters where did you-""Well, well, well. If it isn't the one that got away."
We all glanced up and a wide smile appeared on my face as I saw Tío Pedro standing in front of us. His hair was a light brown which was almost golden and his eyes were a little grey.
"Hi Tío!" I said happily as I got up to give him a hug.
"Hello Jasmine," he chuckled as he kissed me on my cheek. "My word, you're looking as beautiful as ever."
"Thank you."Then he turned to Valentino and folded his arms across his chest. "So. You married my niece, hmm?"
"Yes Pedro, I did," Valentino said as he rose off the couch with Dad and Damen.
"And whose permission did you seek before you went and put a ring on her finger?"Before Valentino could respond to the question Tío Miguel, Tía Juanita and Tulia came in. Tío Miguel, the oldest of the Petrova children, had the same eye colour as his mother but his hair was honey blonde, much like mine. Tía Juanita, his wife had light blue eyes and dark hair that was always kept short.
Tía Tulia was Tío Pedro's wife and the second born child as well as the first daughter. She inherited Abuela's eyes and hair when she was a child but she dyed it in burgundy when she became an adult. Now it hung just a few inches above her shoulders.
"I heard it but I didn't believe it until I saw it," Tía Tulia said. "Not only is Jasmine in Colombia, she's also married. To Valentino Guerrero of all people. Rebecca you have some explaining to do."
"I am well aware of that Tulia," Mom said. "But what say we wait until the entire family is present?"
"It's almost lunch time so they should all be here momentarily. Ivan isn't here yet but he said he was coming today with Andriana and Kazimir. And if you don't already know Jasmine Andriana is-"
