The soft glow of candlelight flickered across the room as Hope Mikaelson carefully arranged the final touches on the dining table. The air was filled with the scent of her cooking, a mix of Josie's favorite dishes. It had been a year since they'd confessed their feelings and started dating—a year filled with love, laughter, and the kind of magic that didn't need spells. Tonight was their anniversary, and Hope wanted everything to be perfect.
She glanced at the clock, a smile tugging at her lips. Josie would be home soon, likely with the bouquet of flowers she had mentioned getting earlier. Hope's heart fluttered with anticipation. She couldn't wait to see the look on Josie's face when she walked in and saw everything she'd prepared.
But her thoughts were interrupted by a knock at the door.
Hope frowned slightly. Josie usually just let herself in, so who could it be? She wiped her hands on a towel and walked to the door, her curiosity piqued. When she opened it, her breath caught in her throat.
Standing there, looking just as surprised to see her, was Landon Kirby—her ex-boyfriend.
"Landon?" Hope asked, her voice a mixture of shock and annoyance. "What are you doing here?"
Landon shifted nervously, his eyes scanning her face as if searching for something familiar. "Hope, I... I needed to see you. Can I come in?"
"No," Hope said quickly, her tone firm. She moved to close the door, but Landon pushed past her, stepping into the room.
"Landon, what the hell?" Hope snapped, spinning around to face him as he walked further into her home. "What are you doing here? You need to leave. Now."
But Landon wasn't listening. His eyes had caught sight of the beautifully set table, the candles, the soft music playing in the background. He turned to face her, a grin spreading across his face. "Is this for me?"
Hope crossed her arms, irritation bubbling up inside her. "No, it's not. It's for Josie. It's our anniversary tonight."
The grin on Landon's face faltered, replaced by a look of disbelief. "Josie Saltzman? You're with her now?"
Hope sighed, exasperated. "Yes, Landon. We broke up two years ago. You need to move on."
But Landon shook his head, taking a step closer to her. "Hope, I can't move on. I still love you. I always have. Please, take me back."
Hope's eyes narrowed, her patience wearing thin. "Landon, I don't love you. I never did, not like that. I'm with Josie now, and she's the one I love. She's the one I'm going to spend my life with."
Landon's face hardened as he stared at her. "You don't mean that. We were good together, Hope. You're just confused."
"I'm not confused!" Hope snapped, her voice rising. "I'm happy with Josie. I love her, Landon. You need to accept that and leave."
Before Hope could react, Landon closed the distance between them, grabbing her by the waist and pulling her into a kiss. Hope's eyes widened in shock, her hands pushing against his chest as she tried to shove him away.
At that exact moment, the front door creaked open.
"Hope, I'm back—" Josie's voice trailed off as she stepped inside, holding a bouquet of flowers. Her eyes took in the scene before her—Landon's hands on Hope's waist, their lips touching—and the bouquet slipped from her fingers, falling to the floor.
"Josie!" Hope exclaimed, finally managing to push Landon off her. She took a step back, her heart pounding in her chest as she looked at Josie, who stood frozen in the doorway, her expression a mix of shock, hurt, and confusion.
For a moment, the room was silent, the only sound the soft crackle of the candles and the rain beginning to patter against the windows outside. Hope's heart raced as she saw the pain in Josie's eyes, knowing how terribly this must have looked.
"Josie, it's not what it looks like," Hope said quickly, her voice trembling with desperation. She stepped toward her, but Josie held up a hand, stopping her in her tracks.
"Really?" Josie's voice was soft but edged with hurt. "Because it sure looks like you were kissing your ex-boyfriend."
"No, he kissed me," Hope insisted, her eyes pleading with Josie to believe her. "I didn't want it, Josie. I was trying to get him to leave. I swear."
Landon, sensing the tension, tried to step in. "Josie, it was just a—"
"Shut up, Landon!" Hope snapped, her eyes blazing as she rounded on him. "You have no right to be here, and you definitely have no right to mess with my life! Get out!"
Landon looked between them, realizing he was outnumbered and unwelcome. With a sigh, he finally backed down. "Alright, I'm leaving," he muttered, heading for the door. He paused as he reached it, looking back at Hope with one last pleading glance. "I'm sorry, Hope. I just... I thought maybe you still had feelings for me."
Hope didn't respond, her focus entirely on Josie, who was still standing there, her face unreadable. Landon hesitated, then finally stepped out into the night, the door closing behind him with a soft click.
The silence that followed was heavy, the tension thick between them. Hope slowly approached Josie, her heart breaking at the sight of the flowers scattered on the floor. She knew how much thought Josie had put into this evening, and how her plans had been ruined by Landon's unexpected intrusion.
"Josie, please," Hope whispered, reaching out to touch her arm. "You have to believe me. I love you. I would never..."
Josie blinked, tears welling up in her eyes as she looked at Hope. "I know you wouldn't," she said softly, her voice trembling. "But seeing that... it hurt, Hope. It really hurt."
Hope felt a tear slide down her cheek as she stepped closer, cupping Josie's face in her hands. "I'm so sorry," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "I didn't want this to happen. I didn't want you to get hurt. I was planning this perfect night for us, and then he just... he showed up out of nowhere."
Josie leaned into Hope's touch, her eyes closing as she took a shaky breath. "I know," she whispered. "I believe you, Hope. It's just... seeing it, it brought back all those insecurities I thought I'd gotten over. Like maybe I'm not enough for you."
"Josie, you're more than enough," Hope said firmly, her thumb gently brushing away a tear from Josie's cheek. "You're everything to me. I don't care about anyone else. I only want you."
Josie opened her eyes, looking into Hope's with a vulnerability that made Hope's heart ache. "You promise?" she whispered.
"I promise," Hope replied, her voice full of conviction. "I love you, Josie Saltzman. And I'm going to spend the rest of my life proving that to you."
Josie's lips trembled into a small smile as she leaned forward, pressing her forehead against Hope's. "I love you too, Hope Mikaelson," she whispered. "So much."
For a moment, they just stood there, holding
each other as the storm outside intensified, the rain tapping against the windows in a steady rhythm. Eventually, Josie pulled back slightly, looking around the room at the beautiful setup Hope had worked so hard on."This really is amazing, Hope," she said, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "You did all this for me?"
"Of course I did," Hope replied, brushing a strand of hair behind Josie's ear. "You're my everything, Josie. I wanted tonight to be perfect for you."
Josie's smile grew as she took in the sight of the candlelit table, the delicious food, and the soft, romantic ambiance. Despite the earlier interruption, she couldn't help but feel touched by how much thought and effort Hope had put into making their anniversary special.
"Then let's not waste any more time," Josie said, wiping away the last of her tears. "I want to enjoy this evening with you."
Hope smiled, relief flooding through her. "That sounds perfect."
