Josie Saltzman had always been a fierce and determined detective, committed to justice and the safety of her team. Despite the shadows of doubt that often clouded her mind, she carried herself with an inner strength that made her a force to be reckoned with. It was this very resolve that led her to be assigned to one of the most dangerous missions yet—guarding Captain Klaus Mikaelson, a man with many enemies.
Klaus had always been a formidable leader, respected and feared in equal measure. His presence commanded attention, and his reputation was legendary. But even legends had their vulnerabilities, and tonight, as the two of them walked into the dark alleys of New Orleans on a case, Josie knew she had to stay vigilant.
The night was still, but the tension was palpable. They were close to uncovering a major criminal operation, and Klaus's life was in danger. Josie's sharp instincts had saved them both more than once, but as they approached a hidden warehouse, a sudden gunshot rang out, cutting through the silence like a knife.
Josie didn't think twice. She threw herself in front of Klaus, the bullet finding its mark in her chest. Pain exploded through her, and she collapsed to the ground, her vision blurring. Klaus caught her just before she hit the pavement, his usually calm demeanor shattered.
"Josie, stay with me," he whispered urgently, his voice rough with emotion as he applied pressure to the wound. Blood seeped through his fingers, and for the first time, Klaus felt utterly helpless.
Meanwhile, back at the police station, the rest of the team was wrapping up their tasks for the day. Lizzie, Josie's sister, was deep in conversation with MG, Kaleb, Jed, and Cleo when Hope Mikaelson, the daughter of Klaus and the woman Josie loved, walked in.
"Hey, Lizzie, have you seen Josie?" Hope asked, her tone casual but her eyes searching.
Lizzie smiled, about to answer, when her phone rang. It was Klaus. The second she heard his voice, her smile vanished.
"What do you mean she's been shot?" Lizzie's voice trembled, drawing the attention of everyone in the room. "Where are you?"
Hope's heart skipped a beat as Lizzie hung up, her face pale. "Josie's been shot," Lizzie said, barely above a whisper. "She's at the hospital. Klaus is with her."
The shock hit them all like a wave. Without another word, they hurried to the nearest car, the drive to the hospital a blur of fear and silent prayers.
When they arrived, the hospital was in chaos. They found Klaus in the waiting area, his hands stained with Josie's blood. Hope's breath caught in her throat at the sight. Lizzie rushed to him, demanding answers.
"The bullet...it hit her heart," Klaus said, his voice hollow. "The doctors are operating now, but..."
But what? The question hung in the air, heavy with dread.
A doctor emerged moments later, his expression grave. "Detective Saltzman has a congenital heart defect. We're doing everything we can, but her condition makes this extremely complicated. The chances of her surviving...they're not good."
Lizzie felt her legs give out beneath her, and MG caught her just in time. The others were silent, their faces reflecting the same disbelief and fear that Hope felt deep in her soul.
"No, no, she can't..." Hope's voice broke, tears welling in her eyes. "She's strong, she'll make it, right?"
The doctor hesitated, then shook his head. "She's fighting, but the operation is long and delicate. I'm sorry, but you won't be able to see her until it's over."
Hours passed like days. The team sat in the waiting room, clinging to hope as they waited for news. Klaus remained stoic, but the weight of guilt pressed down on him. Josie had taken the bullet meant for him, and now she was fighting for her life.
