Hope Mikaelson had always been used to feeling out of place. Being a tribrid with a complex history meant she often kept people at arm's length, preferring solitude over the possibility of getting hurt. But all of that changed one fateful night at the Salvatore School's annual Winter Formal.

Josie Saltzman, on the other hand, had always been the warm and friendly one. She was used to being around people, and her kindness made her the school's sweetheart. Yet, beneath her cheerful exterior, Josie often felt unseen, lost in the shadow of her sister Lizzie and burdened by her own insecurities.

The Winter Formal was supposed to be just another school event, but for both Hope and Josie, it turned into a night that would change everything.

The ballroom was decked out in glittering lights, the atmosphere buzzing with excitement as students swirled around the room in their finest attire. Hope had initially intended to skip the event, but after some convincing from Alaric and a gentle nudge from Lizzie, she had reluctantly agreed to attend. Now, standing at the edge of the dance floor in a deep crimson dress that contrasted with her pale skin and dark hair, she felt out of place.

She had been nursing a glass of punch for most of the evening, avoiding small talk and politely declining dance invitations. Her eyes wandered across the room, watching as Lizzie held court with a group of admirers, and MG attempted to teach Kaleb some new dance moves.

Just as she was about to retreat to a quieter corner, the sound of light laughter caught her attention. She turned, her gaze landing on Josie, who was standing near the refreshment table, chatting with some classmates. Josie was wearing a flowing, pale blue gown that shimmered in the light, her long dark hair cascading over her shoulders. She looked radiant, her smile warm and inviting.

Hope felt something stir within her—a strange pull that she couldn't quite explain. She had known Josie for years, but in this moment, under the twinkling lights, it was as if she was seeing her for the first time. Her heart skipped a beat, and before she could stop herself, she began to walk towards her.

Josie glanced up, and their eyes met. For a moment, everything else seemed to fade away—the noise of the party, the other students, even the music. It was just the two of them, standing in a crowded room, yet feeling completely alone together.

"Hey," Hope said, her voice softer than usual, as she reached Josie.

"Hey," Josie replied, her smile growing wider. "I didn't think you were going to come."

"Yeah, I almost didn't," Hope admitted, feeling an unusual nervousness in Josie's presence. "But I'm glad I did."

"I'm glad too," Josie said, her voice filled with sincerity. There was a brief pause, then she added, "Would you like to dance?"

Hope hesitated, then nodded. "Sure."

Josie extended her hand, and Hope took it, feeling a spark as their fingers intertwined. The music slowed as they made their way to the center of the dance floor, and Hope carefully placed her hand on Josie's waist, the other still holding Josie's hand. They began to sway gently to the music, the world around them fading into the background.

As they danced, Hope couldn't help but notice the way Josie's eyes sparkled under the dim lights, or the way her smile seemed to light up the room. There was something magical about the moment, something that made Hope's heart race.

"You look beautiful tonight," Hope said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Josie blushed, looking down for a moment before meeting Hope's gaze again. "Thank you. You do too."

They continued to dance in silence for a while, the tension between them growing with every passing second. Hope felt a thousand things she wanted to say, but she couldn't find the words. All she knew was that she didn't want the moment to end.
