Josie and Lizzie Saltzman had grown used to being the new kids. Every few years, their dad's work took them to a new town, and they had to start over. This time, however, felt different. They weren't just starting at any ordinary school—they were starting at the Mikaelson Boarding School for the Young and Gifted, a place full of students with abilities just like theirs. The twins were excited, but nerves buzzed under their skin as their dad, Alaric, dropped them off at the front gates.
"This place is... huge," Lizzie muttered, glancing up at the sprawling mansion in front of them.
Josie nodded in agreement, gripping the straps of her backpack a little tighter. "We'll be fine. It's not like we haven't done this before."
Lizzie smirked. "Yeah, but this place has actual witches, vampires, and who knows what else. So much for ordinary high school drama."
Just as they were about to walk through the large front doors, they were greeted by a boy with a wide, friendly smile.
"Hey there! You must be the new girls," he said, extending a hand. "I'm MG."
Josie gave him a smile. "I'm Josie."
"I'm Lizzie. Sisters."
"Twins." her Josie added, more warmly.
"Fraternal. Obvs."
MG grinned. "Don't worry. This place may seem intense at first, but everyone here's pretty cool. You'll fit right in."
Just then, another student appeared behind MG, a girl with long braids and a quiet confidence about her. "MG, don't overwhelm them on their first day," she teased. "Hi, I'm Cleo. Welcome."
The twins introduced themselves, exchanging pleasantries before Cleo and MG offered to show them around. As they walked through the halls, they met more students, including Kaleb, a charismatic vampire who Lizzie instantly clicked with, and Jed and Ben, who were both werewolves. Everyone seemed friendly, and for the first time, Josie felt like this might actually be a good place for them.
That was until they met her.
They had just turned a corner when a girl with dark hair, striking blue eyes, and an air of authority about her approached. She leaned against a locker, watching the new arrivals with a smirk tugging at the corners of her lips.
"And who do we have here?" she asked, her voice dripping with amusement.
MG quickly stood straighter. "Uh, Hope, these are the Saltzman twins. They're new here."
"Saltzman, huh?" Hope said, her eyes narrowing slightly as she looked the twins up and down. "Interesting."
Lizzie wasn't one to be intimidated, so she crossed her arms, meeting Hope's gaze without flinching. "What's so interesting about us?"
Hope shrugged, the smirk never leaving her face. "Nothing much. Just that newbies tend to... struggle here. Especially with all the pressure."
Josie could feel the tension building between her sister and Hope, but she wasn't about to let things escalate on their first day. "I'm sure we'll be fine. We can handle ourselves."
"Can you now?" Hope replied, her eyes flicking to Josie. "Well, I'll be watching to see just how well you handle it."
MG cleared his throat awkwardly. "Hope, come on. Don't be like that."
Hope rolled her eyes but gave Josie one last look before walking off, her long hair swaying behind her. "Good luck, Saltzmans. You'll need it."
As soon as she was gone, Lizzie let out an annoyed breath. "What's her problem?"
