Hope sat at the airport, her heart racing with excitement as she glanced at the clock. They had been planning this vacation to the Bahamas for months, and now the day was finally here. She had already checked her luggage. But as the minutes ticked by, her excitement started to shift to mild concern.
She pulled out her phone and sent Landon a quick text.
Hope: Hey, when are you getting here? We board in 2 hours!
She tapped her fingers against her leg as she waited for a response. Landon wasn't always the best at being punctual, but he had assured her he would be at the airport with plenty of time to spare. Still, she couldn't help but feel a little nervous.
Twenty minutes passed with no reply, and Hope glanced at the clock again. Still plenty of time before the flight, but Landon's silence was beginning to gnaw at her. She texted him again.
Hope: You okay? The plane leaves soon.
No response.
With a sigh, Hope tried to shake off the creeping unease. She decided to head through security, figuring that Landon was just running late and would meet her at the gate. She sent one more message, trying to keep things light.
Hope: Hope you didn't forget your sunscreen!
After getting through security, Hope sat down near their gate and checked her phone again. Nothing. She called him, but it went straight to voicemail. Hope's stomach dropped slightly. This wasn't like Landon. He might have been forgetful, but he wouldn't just ghost her, especially not before a trip they had been looking forward to for so long.
The plane was set to board in less than an hour. Hope's foot tapped nervously as she dialed his number again. Voicemail. She shot him another text, her frustration starting to simmer beneath the surface.
Hope: Landon, where are you? The flight leaves in half an hour.
This time, her phone buzzed almost immediately with a response.
Landon: It's difficult.
Hope frowned, confused by his vague reply.
Hope: What do you mean by difficult? Just hurry up, we're about to board.
The next text came through quickly, but it was not what she expected.
Landon: I'm not coming.
Her heart stopped. She read the words again, unable to believe what she was seeing.
Hope: What? What do you mean, you're not coming? We're supposed to go together.
Landon: I just... I don't feel like it. You should go by yourself.
Hope's mouth fell open in disbelief, anger bubbling up inside her. She had put up with his aloofness and distance for months now, hoping this trip would rekindle something between them. But this? Leaving her at the last minute without even bothering to show up?
Hope: Are you serious?
Landon: Just fly alone, Hope. I'm not in the mood.
She felt the heat rising in her cheeks, her hands trembling as she typed out a furious reply.
Hope: Should I go on vacation alone now? Really?
His response was like a punch to the gut.
Landon: Yeah, I'm flying solo from now on.
Hope stared at her phone, feeling a mixture of hurt and anger swirling inside her. After nearly two years together, this was how he chose to end things? Abandoning her at the airport? She had tried to make things work with him, to give him space, to be patient. But this was the final straw.
