Techno POV.

I smiled at my father.  “Now if you don’t mind, we have to get to Cupid HQ to help Tommy get settled into his new office. Then they’ll probably be photos taken.”
“Did’ya hear that Phil?” Tommy asked, turning to our father with the widest grin possible. “Photos of me! I’m gonna be famous!”

“Then I’ll have to hurry home, my roommates are probably expecting me for dinner.” This whole interaction was a challenge, silently begging for a large response from him, daring him to break down his usually calm demeanour. I studied every inch of him to try and find that response, noting every twitch of the eye, every time he tensed up.

It was marvellous, seeing him like this. I was truly happy with the way that he was clearly on the verge of some form of freak-out. “You can come if you’d like father.” I added on. “Watch Tommy and me take over Cupid, take a photo with us so the three of us will always be remembered together.” An opportunity to rub salt in the wound.

“Oh! Shit I almost forgot!” Tommy suddenly broke away, hurrying back into his room. Both of us watched him disappear without context as to why, yet it seemed like a welcome opportunity for Philza. He turned his attention the moment my brother was gone, annoyance, anger, and disappointment all painting on his face together.

“What the hell are you doing?” He asked me, his tone as rough and annoyed as his expression. “Why are you giving Tommy the role of Head Cupid?”
“I’m not.” I answered. “I can’t. The contract forbids me from giving up the role for at least a thousand years. He can’t be Head Cupid.”

“You kept calling him-” I cut the man off before he could finish his sentence.
“I call him Head Cupid because he likes it. He doesn’t have the role officially but will have its duties whenever I am down on Earth unable to fulfil it on my own.” I explained.

“But you live on Earth.” Philza reminded me, and I nodded at him. I do live on Earth, and so I will constantly need someone up here to fill in for me, I told the blond man as much. The twitching started up again, letting me know that my taunting was working.

He stifled a sigh, one of disappointment and annoyance, both of which I liked. When he finished he looked into my eyes with firmness. “You know that you are going to destroy this job, right?” He asked, and I nodded at him. “Tommy will run this whole job into the ground and you are allowing him to do that. Why?”

“Because I didn’t want the job, and you wouldn’t stop bothering me about taking it. If I signed the contract then it means that you don’t have the authority to come and irritate me anymore.” It was a simple explanation, yet one that he still didn’t seem to understand. All that the other angel was able to comprehend was that I had given away the job that he desired me to have.

While he was still processing the information I turned my attention back towards the door that my brother disappeared into. “Tommy, where’d ya go?” I asked. “We’re gonna be late if you don’t hurry up and get out here!” The younger archangel seemed to be waiting for his cue, waiting for me to call him. The moment I finished my sentence he hurried out.

“Sorry… sorry… sorry.” He apologised, grabbing his suitcase again and composing himself. “I had to go and find my tie. It would be improper for the boss of a business to not wear one, plus ladies love people who look fancy!”

“You look very fancy, like a Head Cupid should look.” I confirmed, eyes trailing along over his outfit before eventually drifting back over to my father. “Doesn’t he?” He had a regular red and white shirt on which fell wrinkled around his form. He wore dress pants and a black belt but they contrasted against a pair of scuffed sneakers. The tie was not done properly. I turned to Phil and smirked.

Philza POV

I wanted to say something to Techno, just as he had said something to me when Tommy ran into his room, but I didn’t want to do so in front of my youngest son. He deserved to be called out for what he was doing, winding me up and intentionally putting an important job at risk to show off his pettiness.

Yet I wasn’t going to ask Tommy to leave the room while I scolded his brother, and I wasn’t going to scold his brother in front of him, that would be pure heartless of me. Screaming at Techno about how Tommy was a terrible choice in front of Tommy, that would definitely be bad for me, there was no doubt.

Perhaps Techno noticed this and took pity on me. Perhaps he felt that he deserved to be yelled at because of his actions. Yes, I know that it is unlikely, but that is what it felt like when he told Tommy to leave the room. “Wait for me outside.” His voice was gruff as he tilted his head towards the younger angel. “Just have to grab something from my room then we’ll be off.”

Tommy once again was more than happy to follow his brother’s command, even without any reason to. He gave an excited nod before hurrying out of the house, leaving us alone once again. For a few moments his eyes just lingered on me, before he turned and walked off towards his old bedroom.

I followed him to his room, wanting to ask more questions of him but now genuinely curious about what he might actually be grabbing. He could clearly feel my gaze drilling holes in his back. It felt like I was giving such an intense look that eyes had appeared on each of my feathers too, continuing to glare.

“What else do you want?” He asked, not looking at me as he moved around his room, seeming to focus on two equally important tasks at once. “I can tell that you want to say something.”
“Just another plea.” I sighed, allowing all of my anger to fizzle out. He wanted me angry, and so it would do nothing to change his mind. “A plea for you to think about what you are doing.”

“I have.” He turned to look at me. The bright red that usually complemented his eyes had fizzled down to a dull brown colour. “It may have only been a few hours, which is quite short since some take years to answer, but I have thought. You didn’t respect that I didn’t want the job, and so I don’t respect the job.”

“All I have been trying to do is look out for the future of the business.”
“Exactly. You’ve been looking out for the future of the business, not the future of me. So I have been looking out for my future, and not the future of the business. If you wanted a leader more capable than Tommy, you should have looked for one earlier.”

I was insistent. “Humans need soulmates! They need something like that to keep them happy! Does that mean nothing to you?”
“Basically.” He had begun walking back towards the doorway and I knew our time for conversation was almost up.

To give myself a little more time, even if only a few seconds, I grabbed his arm. “Techno. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have forced you into the role.” I paused for a second, thinking about my other son, before continuing. “Please. Instead of making Tommy the unofficial Head Cupid, give me back the role instead. Nobody has to know. Then you can go home.”

He hesitated, eyes basically searching my soul. Techno was definitely taking the moment to scan through my thoughts, combing over everything near the surface. Then he yanked his hand away. “Sorry Dad, too late.”
