Title: Rebirth After Widowhood

Type: Chinese novel

Author: Xiao Jia Ren

Chapters: 184 + 12 extras

Description:

Before becoming a widow, Hua Yang disliked almost everything about her husband. She disliked his sullen face every day, disliked him for lying on the bed full of sweat, and even disliked his lack of restraint at certain moments.

But when he really died and she became a widow, Hua Yang actually began to miss his good qualities one by one, such as his figure walking steadily in the heavy rain carrying her on his back, such as his blazing hot chest in the cold winter.

Once reborn, Hua Yang decided to be nice to him.

Thoughts:

Historical slice of life!

I love a good second chance story and a fun bickering couple, especially when it's not a one sided "arguement". Even when FL and ML improved their relationship, they never stopped bickering, which made the rare tender and loving moments even more precious.

I liked the fact that while the first life ended terribly, it was not irredeemable

I liked the fact that while the first life ended terribly, it was not irredeemable. Both leads had their differences, flaws, and stubborness but through communication and a little compromise (not to the point it changes/invalidates their values), they made the relationship work. It felt more mature and natural than other novels.

This story is a mix of politics and romance. I honestly don't know if it's realistic or not, but it was not boring. I got invested in the scenes I usually just skim over. I especially liked how FL influenced others' mindset rather than directly meddle since politics was never her forte. It lead to the gradual character development of the leads and many side characters.

Speaking of side characters, I really liked their characterizations. They were not written just to shallowly show diversity, but showcased their motives, thought processes, etc. I liked how they actually had brains that think, rather than being simple mobs.

Like, while I have neutral feelings about ML's father and 99.9% hate the emperor, not everything they did was bad (the emperor still disgusts me tho). All characters had their own depth and complexities, which made it more fun! (their personalities was not based on a single trait/adjective)

Anyways I really enjoyed this novel! I personally think it's one of the best in the historical genre. It does not have a lot of drama, but the plot progession never felt stale. Even with 196 chapters, the side stories left me wanting more. So yeah, try it!
