Honestly, ML is the type of male lead who treats their female lead badly, discovers her real self, then loves her. He is the kind of scum male lead you'll hate, then (maybe) like. Kinda like Prince Jian from Ruyi byharui30.
As an emperor, he already had many women and even children before the FL, which I personally don't mind since that fact made it more realistic (I didn't root for him though heh).
I didn't really like him at the beginning and it was very satisfying to know that most things he believed in was a lie. I did feel bad sometimes, but still, fuck him lol.
I like rational characters and FL is very rational. She is also smart and likes to play it safe (not necessarily a bad thing). She treated her position like a job and was very skeptical when ML decided to woo her. I appreciated how she didn't immediately cave in the second ML changed.
It took a really long time for ML to redeem himself, as it should.
Anyways it is a good story, I enjoyed it!
So yeah, if you want a loyal from the start male lead, don't read this cause ML will experience major character development. Also be warned that the age gap is quite high and FL married in young (I'm fine with it cause it's during ancient times, but it's illegal in a modern setting.)
Oh and btw the MTL is quite difficult (more like confusing) to read, but that didn't stop me from doing it and suffering from a headache.
