My First Party

Katie:

After everything that occurred at the beginning of the month, I thought things might be different between Hugh and I, but they had never been better. I really liked being his girlfriend, and I liked having a boyfriend. I often wondered to myself how I had managed to capture the attention of Hugh, and what I did to deserve the way he treated me. He still walked me to all my classes, carried my books, and always saved me a seat at lunch. I had attended a few more rugby games, and I had been to Hugh's house every weekend, last weekend I went with him, Claire and Gibsie to the cinema. We saw "Pay it Forward" which resulted in all of us shedding a few tears. 

Today, afterschool I'm going to go to Aoife's to get ready for the party tonight. Not only is it Halloween night, but it's also Hughie's birthday. 

I've spent the whole month contemplating what to get Hugh, with a limited budget it was difficult. I decided on Radiohead's new CD "Kid A". They're my favourite band, and I really hope that he'll like it. 

The day seemed to drag on, I was both dreading and counting down the seconds until the party. On one hand, I was excited to celebrate Hugh's birthday and spend time with him. But, on the other hand, I was anxious about being around all of those people. I had never been to a secondary school party.

Eventually, the bell rang and I got picked up from school. Once I got home, I booked it to Aoife's, where Casey was already preparing the makeup for my costume. Aoife and Casey's party started much later than mine, so the plan was for them to get me ready first. I was wearing part of an old costume of Aoife's. I was going as an angel, but I was only using her halo and wings and replacing her mini skirt and small top with one of my white dresses. I also switched out her white pumps with my white converse, which was more of a safety precaution for all those around me.

Casey, really was a pro at makeup, she put sparkly eyeshadow on my eyes, and a bunch of other products. Aoife curled my hair, and pinned part of it up in the back. Looking in the mirror, I felt beautiful, which was rare for me and I soaked in the feeling.

"I have to say, this costume suits Katie much more than you Aoife, given that Katie actually is an angel." Casey says, and I blush.

"You look stunning Katie, I know you get in your head but you're gorgeous all of the time." Aoife says.

"Hugh, is one lucky lad." Casey adds.

"Is Hugh's Mam picking you up angel?" Aoife asks.

"No, his friend Patrick drives past here so he's giving me a spin."

"Ooh Patrick, one rugby bloke not good enough for you?" Casey asks.

"No, it's not like that, we're just friends." I reply defensively. 

"I'm only teasing, I know you're a good girl, speaking of would you be able to place an order for me next week?" Casey asks.

"Ahhh...the real reason you two keep me around" I joke.

Aoife gives me a hug, careful not to squish my wings, "You know we keep you around to set us up with rich rugby boys." We all burst out laughing. 

I check the time, "Patrick, will be here so I better go." I step out the door with my bag and Hugh's gift wrapped in a small gift bag.

Patrick and his mother arrive, as I'm walking out the door, I can see his mam give him a gentle shove, and he's opening the passenger seat door.
