January 27th, 2006:

Katie:

Aoife had completely blindsided me, and now I was attending a party with the intention of her setting me up with somebody I didn't even like. Podge was probably great but I wasn't ready for anything new, I would need a lot of time to recover from my relationship with Hugh.

"Is this really necessary?" I ask examining the makeup Aoife had applied on my face, and my hair that she was curling into soft waves.

"Of course, it's a party." Aoife answers like it should be obvious. "Just wait until you see what I brought for you to wear!"

I groan, "why can't I wear something from my wardrobe?"

Aoife picks up another strand of my hair, "because, my sweet neighbour, all of your clothes hide this gorgeous figure, and I do not share that afflictions with my clothing."

I grumble, "I just want to stay in my room, and keep my head down until I'm done with school."

"Remember, when you and Casey dragged me to that party and you convinced me to stay and talk with Joey? You quite literally saved our relationship, K" she looks at me gratefully.

"That was also the night where you quite literally told me that there was something going on between Liz and Hugh." I retort.

"Did you say anything to him that night?" She asked.

"Yeah, but he just brushed it off, by the end of it, I felt like it was my fault." I say, reflecting and cringing at my weakness.

"Christ, that boy. Please let Casey and I get revenge." Aoife eyes dance, "maybe like vandalism, or something more drastic?"

"I will not be the reason, AJ's mother and godmother are in prison." I reply, silently grateful for both of them for having my back.

"We'll talk about it later" Aoife concedes, "ta-da, you're all done!" She says finishing my last piece of hair, and inspecting her work. "Now time for the outfit" she says walking excitedly to her duffel bag, pulling out a dark blue dress that would literally be a shirt on her. I know I'm half a foot shorter than her, but this is too much, or I guess not enough.

"Aoife, I cannot wear this in public!"

"Yes, you can, I borrowed it from Shan, and she literally said and I quote 'Katie would look beyond beautiful in this' and I said 'wouldn't she!' and now you have to wear it."

Aoife starts literally pulling at my school clothes then, "either by force, or you go to the bathroom, and get into this dress, that was, for real made for you." I grab the dress, grumbling to the bathroom, and avoid looking at myself in the mirror.

Aoife gasps when I remerge, "you look gorgeous!" I wave her off and move for my coat and boots.

For Christmas Aoife got me a pair of leather boots that went to my knees, they're super cute, but I haven't had any occasions to wear them too. But with this dress, it was probably best if I could cover up as much skin as possible.

"Perfect, I imagined the dress with those, and ooh... not the winter jacket" she says shaking her head, "wear the leather jacket!"

My Mam had gifted me this leather jacket for my last birthday, and it was not my style, but Aoife loved it and tried to persuade to me wear it constantly. It was gorgeous, but it felt like more something a rockstar would wear and not a pianist who suffered from such severe stage fright, I couldn't perform in front of anyone.

I actually hadn't played for anyone besides Patrick for the last eight years. He was a musician too, so I guess I trusted him.

I wouldn't say he made me comfortable though. Safe, yes. But he had this ability to set me on edge whenever we together. Maybe it's because I know how observant he is, or because I know he's paying attention.

He never pretends, and I like that. It's refreshing. Since the break up, everyone has been walking on eggshells around me, even Aoife. But Patrick was the same, those fierce knowing eyes, telling me that he saw me.

I shrugged the jacket on, and slipped on the boots, "eek! I love it, Podge is going to flip when he sees you."

"I'm going to this party to spend time with you" I correct.

Her eyes soften, "I don't mean to push you, but I think this will be good, and if it's not we can come back here and gorge on sweets and rot like you want" she says sweetly, "but only if you actually try to have fun tonight, give it a chance, give Podge a chance and then decide."

"Okay, I promise, I'll try." I say, and she wraps me in a hug.

"Okay, I'm going to go say bye to AJ and then I gotta pick Joey up, I better leave before Feely gets here!"

That was another thing, why was she so adamant about it being Patrick that drove me? I could easily tag along with her and Joey, and meet him there. I don't know what she's playing at.
