December 1st, 2003
Hugh:
Ever since we went to the cinema with Gibsie and Feely, Katie had been more distant than usual. I couldn't get it out of my head, blocking Lizzie out of my mind, gave me more time to pay attention to her feelings and something was off.
"Hey can, I ask you guys something?" I ask to Johnny, Gibsie, and Feely and they all nod. I knew they would, they were always there for me. "It's about Katie."
We were in the locker room, after all of the other lads had left.
"What about the little brainiac?" Gibsie asks.
"She's just been different."
"In what way?" Johnny asks.
"Just quieter, more nervous I guess, I don't know I feel like she's hiding something."
"Have you asked her about it?" Feely asked, looking genuinely concerned.
"Yeah, she says it's nothing, but I don't think I'm just imagining it."
"Didn't she do this in first year too?" Gibsie asks.
"What do you mean?" I ask.
"In first year, at the beginning, she was my little buddy then one day she left me, it really impacted my abandonment issues." Gibsie, said of course making everything remotely serious into a joke.
Johnny speaks up, "Yeah, I remember, Feely brought it up to us."
"You did?"
He looks away, "I might have, it was a while ago." He said evasively, which wasn't uncommon for him, so I didn't put too much thought into it. "When did it start?"
"When we went to the cinema, and watched that stupid movie."
"Hey, that film was a masterpiece." Gibsie says defensively, and I roll my eyes.
"She left early, to catch up with you, but you were already gone when she got there." I say to Patrick, trying to piece it together.
"What?" Patrick asks, surprised. I gave him a weird look, and he schooled his features, "Why'd she come after me?"
Gibsie starts humming obnoxiously, and I shove him. "I told her how you were sick, probably wanted to check in."
"Oh" Feely says absentmindedly, not really looking for an answer.
