Patrick:
"Hey Patrick" I turn around seeing Katie trying to get my attention. "Would you be able to give Casey and Aoife a ride home?"
"Yeah, of course." I say, I definitely wouldn't say no to getting a break from this party. "I'll be outside, just come out when you're ready."
Katie walked back to the kitchen, where people were circling around Casey, Lizzie, and a blond lad I didn't recognize.
I was kind of intrigued by Casey, she seemed to know Katie quite well, but couldn't be more different. Casey was direct and confident.
I catch the end of Katie's conversation, "you can trust him." I guess she's talking about me, and it's kind of odd, to hear someone you spend most of your time thinking about, telling someone else what they think of you.
Aoife helped Casey into the backseat, she was grumbling and swaying lightly. "Thanks, Katie. Sorry about this." Aoife said directed at Katie.
"It's totally fine, girlie, you didn't do anything wrong." Katie replies, hugging her blonde friend.
Casey spoke up from the back seat again slurring her words, "I don't want to go home, I'm having fun."
"Yeah, ruining my life." Aoife grumbled. they talked a little bit more, before the lad from the kitchen interjected, asking her to stay.
Casey was immediately protesting and telling him to leave her alone. Katie talked to the pair for a minute, before climbing into the back seat with Casey, as Aoife and her man walked away.
"Aoife's going to stay, so I'll just come with you." Katie said. I just nod.
Casey's seriously hammered, "hey I know you," she says pointing to me. "You're Katie's fella, Huge or something like that."
"Casey, this is Patrick, you met him an hour ago." Katie said.
"You're not dating Hugh anymore? It's probably for the best, he doesn't deserve you." I don't know how to feel about that statement.
"Casey!" Katie says trying to shut her friend up, I wanted to agree but I pretended to not be eavesdropping.
"I think this one's cuter too." Casey whisper yells, leaning her head on Katie's head.
"I'm still with Hugh, Casey." Katie says, "Patrick's a friend."
"You're both way too pretty to be just friends."
"Oh my God, Case" Katie groans. "Just drop it."
"Guess what?"
"What Casey?"
"I met a really cute guy, and we danced together."
"Is that so?" She asks feigning surprise.
"Yep, a rugby boy, an inside centre."
"Would his name be Patrick, by chance?"
"Did you meet him too?"
"I think I've seen him around school." Katie says laughing, but she stills when our eyes meet in the rearview mirror.
When we arrive at her house Katie and I both help her to her doorway, and then Katie helped her into her room. After a few minutes she reemerged from the house. She looked gorgeous, and yet Hugh had spent his whole night distracted by Lizzie and her drama.
Katie climbed intro the front seat and we started driving back to the party. "Casey's a really great girl, she wasn't acting her best tonight. But she's usually a lot of fun to be around."
"Yeah?" I asked bored.
"Mhmm, she's really caring too, she was so crazy tonight because she cares about Aoife so much."
"Okay."
"I can give you her number if you want."
I don't know what to say, Casey was pretty, and funny, and confident, and was definitely interested in me. But she wasn't Katie.
"Uh, yeah..sure." I say finally, thinking maybe being with someone else would take my mind off of things, although I doubted meaningless sex with one of her friends would fill the void that Katie Wilmot had left in me.
We sat in silence. Katie fiddled around with the radio, until landing on a station that she liked. The current song ended and started playing U2's "With or Without You." That fucking song haunted me, the sound of her voice. The way her voice sounded just for me, I asked to sing and she sang for me and it was god damn beautiful. The memory kept me awake at night.
Katie laughed, "do you remember when I sang this?" How could I have forgotten? I hadn't forgotten anything she's done in the last four years, how could I?
"Yeah."
She turns the dial up, heightening the sound and starts humming along to the song.
I don't know what possesses me, but I ask something of her, "Sing."
"What?" She asks looking at me.
"For me." I say not breaking eye contact.
She takes me by surprise and responds, "Only if you do it with me."
"You want me to sing?" I ask.
"For me." She mimics my earlier response.
My driving is definitely suffering from all of this eye contact, but I don't think a head on collision could have stopped me from looking at her. With Katie, it went beyond the way she looked. There was something about her soul, that I inherently understood. It was like an innate part of me that called to her. My mother once told me that some souls just understand each other. That's how I felt about Katie. Even in silence, we understood.
Maybe, I was crazy for thinking that she felt in any way connected to me, that our bond went beyond being her boyfriend's best friend. But she made me fucking crazy, and God help me, in moments like this, I didn't want to be cured.
We both joined in on the chorus, repeating "And you give yourself away...." and it's like we're transported into our own little world. I've never sung with another person, but I'm fairly certain it wouldn't feel like this.
Thanks for reading! I really like how this chapter turned out! - H <3
