November 9th, 2001
Patrick:
"You don't have to walk me to class." Katie says, as we both stand up from the lunch table.
"I'm not walking you, I'm walking with you, our classes are across from each other." I say falling into step beside her, adjusting my speed to account for her shorter legs. Her eyes are busy scanning the hallways for something.
"Here" I say, handing her a granola bar from my lunch, I noticed she hadn't eaten anything the whole time Bella was there.
She takes it looking sheepish, she obviously thought that no one was paying attention to her, that no one could see her.
"Thanks" she says pocketing the bar. I notice the space between us growing, like she doesn't want anyone to see us walking too close. "Is everything okay with Hugh?" She asks.
"I think so. Why do you ask?"
"Why did your coach ask to speak with him?"
"Oh, he's been missing a lot of practices and I think its like a check in."
"He's been missing practices?" And I freeze.
"Hasn't he been with you?"
"Um...No he hasn't."
"Oh, it's probably nothing."
"Okay" Katie says and we fall into easy silence.
"Are you feeling okay? After yesterday with... you know."
"Yep, just needed sleep."
"Did you go the doctors?"
"I was all good by the time I got home, didn't really see a reason to."
"Okay." Our interaction from yesterday had been playing on a loop in my head and I kept thinking about her odd behaviour.
"Why did you run when Pierce showed up yesterday? Is he the one bothering you?" I ask, hoping for her to be honest.
"No one's bothering me. I just was kind of out of it because"
"You were tired?" I cut her off, tired of her lies, if she didn't want to confide in me then that was fine. I wasn't her boyfriend. But I also couldn't just turn my head off.
When we reached her classroom, I was feeling discouraged, and a little jealous from having to watch Katie kiss Hughie, I obviously knew they kissed but I didn't want to have to see it.
"Thanks Patrick"
"For what?"
"For caring." and with that she turned and disappeared into her classroom, leaving me confused once again.
