Patrick:

"Lad, what happened to 'it'll pass'" Gibsie said in a quiet tone, pulling me out my trance. I was so angry at Hugh, for kissing Katie like that just to make Lizzie jealous, on her birthday at that. I had practically crushed the milk carton in my hand in an attempt to stop myself from saying anything. "Jesus, what did that milk ever do to you?"

"What is it Gibs?" I answered in a clipped tone.

"Stop trying to kill Hugh with your eyes and calm down."

"I am calm" I whisper, thankfully the table is loud and bustling and it covers the sound of our whisper arguing.

"Oh yes, and I've got a million dollars in my back pocket." He says, his tone dipped in sarcasm.

I sigh and let go of the milk carton I've punctured holes in, "Hugh...He's taking her for granted, I mean he did that whole show, embarrassing her just to piss off Liz." I'm talking so quiet I'm surprised Gibsie can even hear me, "And for what? Liz is just going to take it out on her and probably you."

Gibsie looks down and nods, "Do something about it then."

"You know I can't do that."

"I've got an idea." Never words you want to hear from Gibsie.

Before I can stop him he's already talking,"So Katie, I hear you're having dinner at the Bigg's house tonight." Gibsie says and Katie nods, "Well I was wondering if you'd mind if I attended?"

"Of course not." She says kind of nervously.

"Great, Pa and I will see you tonight." Gibs says and I eye him strangely.

"What? Why did you do that?" I ask as we get up from the table and start walking towards our classrooms.

"Doing something about it."

"Explain, asshole."

"Tell Katie, how you feel and let her decide."

"Are you out of your damn mind?"

"I don't think so, but I get asked that so frequently that I'm being to suspect I might be."

"Hugh will never forgive me, and Katie loves him, she won't just leave him."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Okay then."

"Okay what?"

"Practice just being her friend tonight then."

"We are already friends."

"We're friends and you've never looked at me the way you look at your Katie Kat."

"Well you have kissed me."

"You bring that up so much, it makes me think you want more."

"I bring it up a lot because you bloody traumatized me, it's imprinted on my brain."

"Keep telling yourself that."

Five hours later, I'm standing in front of Hugh's front door regretting ever becoming friends with Gerard Gibson.

After knocking I'm greeted by Claire, "Hey Patrick! I didn't know you were coming."

"It was last minute."

"Well, the more the merrier, my mother has cooked like way too much food." She says leading me into the dining room past the small table of gifts, the gift I got her burning a hole in my pocket.
