Katie:

"I feel like I haven't talked to you in ages" Aoife says, as she inspects the last toe she's painted.

"You've been a little preoccupied with Joey" I say, jokingly. I didn't know how good Joey was for Aoife, but I knew they loved each other, more than anyone I had ever met. I also knew there was no warning Aoife off of something that she loved, she was strong like that.

"And you've been a little preoccupied with your rugby boy."

"He has a name, Aoife."

"Right, Herbert? Harold, no, no... Hagnus." Aoife, wasn't Hugh's biggest fan. She knew I loved him, but she didn't think he 'deserved' me. Whatever that meant, I wasn't Aoife, I was lucky that Hugh noticed me.

"Hugh." I reminded her.

"Ah, right."

I decide to change the topic, "Are you ready for your sixth year?"

"Nope, I think I'll be sixteen for the rest of my life."

"How's that working for you?"

"We'll have to see, I guess." She looks down, "What about you? Nervous for fourth year?"

"Not really, well actually..."

"What?"

"Tommen does this ski trip for year fives and sixes in Andorra."

"And you're worried Hagnus is going to cheat?"

"No, of course not, I got a letter from the school and this year because of the new thing where you can graduate in fifth year, fourth years are included on the trip."

"Are you going to graduate in fifth year?"

"No, I'm going to stay until sixth, but anyone from fourth year can come on the trip."

"Are you going to?"

"I don't know, I mean it kind of has a reputation."

"What reputation?"

I blush, "A sort of coming of age experience."

"I feel like you tried to censor that and somehow made it way dirtier than just saying sex" Aoife laughed and I bowed my head in embarrassment.

"Oh God."

"Don't worry, I'll teach Hugh a lesson, if he pressures you."

"I don't think he will, but maybe I should."

"Kathryn Aideen Horgan-Wilmot, shut the front door."

I can feel even my ears blush.

"Are you sure? It's not just for him?"

I nod, and I think it's true. I love him and he's older than me, all his friends are. I actually haven't seen Patrick with any girls, but Gibsie and Johnny for sure are. We had done other things, but just never that.

"Well, has your Mam had the talk with you?"

"Yes, please do not start with me, Aoife!" I say laughing.

"When a man and a woman love each other...." I cut her off by covering her mouth, and threatening to ruin her polish. "Okay, okay got it."

"Do you even know how to ski?" Aoife asks after a few minutes.

"How difficult can it be?"
