A deafening clap of thunder split through the midnight sky, rattling the windows and shaking the old house to its bones. Rain pelted against the roof like a steady yet fierce drumbeat, while flashes of lightning illuminated the darkened bedroom in sharp, jagged streaks.
In the small room down the hall, Y/n shot up in bed, her tiny body trembling as she clutched her stuffed bunny to her chest. The storm raged on, the booming thunder making her heart pound faster. She whimpered softly, her wide, dark eyes darting to the doorway. Shadows flickered ominously across the walls, cast by the erratic glow of lightning. She squeezed her bunny tighter, seeking comfort in its familiar worn fur, but it wasn't enough.
Sniffling, she kicked off her blankets and slid off her bed, her small feet padding against the cool wooden floor. She hesitated momentarily before hurrying toward her parents' room, her bunny held close. The hallway seemed endless in the dark, but she knew the way by heart.
With a quiet creak, she pushed the heavy oak door open and peeked inside. The room was dimly lit by the soft golden glow of the bedside lamp Agatha always left on, just in case. The storm had barely disturbed the two figures lying tangled in the center of the large bed, their warmth and love radiating even in slumber.
"Mami...? Mama...?" Y/n whispered, her voice barely above a breath.
Rio, despite being half-asleep, stirred almost instantly. Years of motherly instinct had trained her to recognize the sound of her daughter's voice, even in the depths of sleep. Without opening her eyes, she shifted just enough to lift the heavy blanket, wordlessly inviting Y/n into the safety of their bed.
Relief flooded Y/n as she wasted no time climbing in, nestling between her mother's. The familiar scent of Agatha's lavender lotion and Rio's subtle cinnamon perfume surrounded her, immediately soothing her frazzled nerves. She burrowed into Agatha's side, her tiny hands gripping her stuffed bunny tightly.
Agatha hummed softly in her sleep, automatically wrapping an arm around Y/n and pulling her close. Her warmth was comforting, her steady heartbeat a lullaby against Y/n's ear. With each breath, Y/n felt herself relax a little more, but the storm still raged outside, each clap of thunder making her flinch.
Agatha stirred, her blue eyes fluttering open as she felt their daughter's small body tremble against her. "Oh, baby girl," she murmured, her voice thick with sleep but filled with tenderness. The storm woke you, huh?"
Y/n nodded against her chest, her grip on her bunny never loosening. Agatha pressed a soft kiss to her forehead, then began to hum a familiar melody. It was an old Salem lullaby, passed down through generations, whispered to witches and mortals alike to lull them into peaceful dreams. The melody wove through the dimly lit room like a spell, wrapping Y/n in its gentle embrace.
Now fully awake, Rio shifted so she could wrap an arm around her wife and daughter, pulling them closer. "Mi dulce niña," she murmured against Y/n's curls, the Spanish endearment rolling off her tongue like honey. "We've got you. You're safe."
Another bright flash of lightning split across the sky, followed by a boom of thunder that made Y/n squeeze her eyes shut. She pressed herself closer to Agatha, seeking more comfort.
"Shh, baby, it's alright," Agatha soothed, fingers carding through Y/n's dark hair in slow, comforting strokes. "Thunder is just the sky clapping for the witches below."
Y/n peeked up at her through her lashes, her brow furrowed in sleepy confusion. "Really?"
A soft chuckle rumbled in Agatha's chest. "Mhm. It's an old belief. When witches do great things, the sky celebrates with thunder. And the lightning?" She tapped a gentle finger against Y/n's nose. "That's just magic flashing across the sky. Nothing to be scared of."
Y/n let out a tiny breath, mulling over her mother's words. It was a comforting thought that made the storm seem far less frightening. Instead of something big and uncontrollable, it was now a celebration—one she was wrapped up safely in the middle of, shielded by the love of her mothers.
Rio kissed the top of Y/n's head, her grip tightening protectively. "My brave niña," she whispered. "So strong, just like your mamas."
Y/n yawned, and then her small body finally relaxed completely. The rhythmic sound of Agatha's heartbeat, the warmth of Rio's embrace, and the soft melody of the Salem lullaby created a cocoon of comfort. She nuzzled closer, her breaths evening out as sleep began to pull her under once more.
The storm continued outside, but Y/n no longer flinched at the thunder. Safe in her mother's arms, she felt nothing but warmth, love, and the quiet hum of magic that had always surrounded their family.
Rio and Agatha exchanged a soft, knowing glance as her breathing grew steady and deep. Agatha ran her fingers gently through Y/n's curls again before settling back against the pillows with a content sigh.
Rio pressed one last kiss to Agatha's temple, then to Y/n's tiny fingers where they clutched her bunny. "Sleep well, mi corazón."
And with that, the three of them drifted into peaceful slumber, wrapped in each other's love as the midnight thunderstorm roared on outside.
