"Well, that's a load of bull," Velvet frowned. "I thought there were times we could, under special circumstances."
"They stopped being able to mess with human's health thousands of years ago," Obasi said. "Hades teamed up with the Fate Department after we kept someone alive much longer than they were supposed to."
Obasi almost missed the simple times. When the department first started, the few cupids there had a lot more freedom to spread love. Then, as per usual, people kept messing up more and more. And more rules had to be put in place. Whether it be angering other gods or actually causing harm to innocents, the reason why the rules were put in place varied. But it basically all summed up to one person ruining it for everyone else.
"I thought Hades liked us," Cameron asked. They weren't too happy about this situation. Melvin had countless reasons as to why he should live. They should be able to do something.
They hated leaving this up to Fate.
"Yes and no," Obasi answered. "Him and his wife enjoy the idea of letting us have a chance to spread love. They just don't like it when it interferes with their work."
"Why can't we make exceptions though?" Velvet pouted. She agreed with Cameron on this one. They should be able to do something other than just sit around and watch. Waiting for those test results was torture.
"Welcome to our world," Sarah shook her head. She had come over to see how their case was going. And it just so happened to be at the worst time. "Anticupids have tried to fight to keep someone alive so many times."
It was heart wrenching doing their job at times. There were plenty of innocent people that got hurt because of someone else who was simply too selfish to understand that what they were doing wasn't right. It took a lot to do their job, as some of the things they saw were not for the feint of heart. The only reason why she kept doing it was because of all the people she could wind up helping. They made it all worth it.
"What do they tell you when you try and ask about it?" Cameron asked, eager to learn more about this request. They had wondered if the Anticupids had come across this dilemma before. Justin just so happened to be on an assignment right then, so they couldn't ask him.
"That the only way I'd have a sliver of a chance is by going to Hades himself to beg," Sarah shivered. "And there's no way I'm ever going down there."
It was terrifying, the thought of going to a god just to beg for one of their clients. That, and Hades wasn't the type of god that could get his heart strings pulled. He was logical, his word set in stone. Trying to convince him would be like talking to a brick wall, and a wall was a lot less scarier to talk to.
"That sounds scary," Benny said, pulling something over from the other room. "And less pink."
"Is pink your favorite color?" Velvet asked.
"I don't have a favorite color," he laughed. "I just like how most of the rooms in this building are pink."
"It is a calming color," Will chimed in, pushing the heavy piece of furniture over.
"What are you two doing now?" Sarah asked. These two were always getting into something, she swore. They somehow managed to bring happiness with them though, lightening up the dreary mood that their lounge room had become.
"We got something that might cheer everyone up!" Benny said. "Although, it might be a pain to set up."
"I'm sure it can't be that bad," Will said.
"What is it?" Cameron asked. Their pink eyes looked at it curiously.
"It's a chocolate fountain!" Will took off the sheet that was covering it in one fell swoop. It was a large box with a picture of the chocolate fountain that was inside it. "I was wondering what this room had been missing, and this will brighten up anyone's day!"
"How did you find one so big?" Velvet asked, her red eyes widening with excitement. She was so happy that she wasn't mortal right then. If she were, she would have gained five pounds just looking at something like that.
"Some storage room back in our department," Will explained. "It's not like it was going to get used for anything, so I though tit would be a great gift to give to you both, since you had to deal with us for a while."
"I never thought that was a bad thing," Cameron chuckled. Then his smile faded as the cupid's words sank in. "Does this mean you both think your assignment is going to end soon?"
"Well," Benny looked up. "I mean, both Mateo and Melvin are really in love. But the boss usually has us wait six months anyway, so we'll probably still be here with you guys for a little bit longer."
He didn't really think it would take too long, but Benny knew that the boss wasn't going to rush them and give them a case right away. As much as he didn't want to hear Obasi talking about them being in trouble, they were still not treated like any other cupid. The other cupids had multiple cases to work on all at once. Benny thought he missed that at first, until he realized how much better it was for him to be able to focus on just one case at a time.
It made researching for matches so much easier too.
"What if he doesn't make it?" Cameron asked. Those bright eyes had dulled as they glossed over. It was sad to see the cupid tear up.
"Hey," Benny went over to hug him. "He'll make it. If there's one thing that I learned about Melvin, it's that he's a lot tougher than he seems."
"Benny's got a point," Will smiled at Cameron. "Besides, it's not good to dwell on the bad, especially when we don't know what's going to happen. The best thing we can do is enjoy the good things now." Then he looked over towards the television screen. "And I think that's just what they're doing too."
Mateo and Melvin were adorable like this. It was definitely a good move on their part to get them to live together. Mateo was hyper focused on Melvin, making sure he didn't overdo himself or try and smoke. And Melvin was enjoying the attention, as much as he always acted like he didn't. It was cute to see the two of them cuddle up and simply talk or enjoy some time alone.
"That's a good point," Cameron sighed, hugging the cupid back. They needed a hug after all that had gone on. "I just wish there was something I could do. I hate not being able to do anything."
"There is something we can do," Will's smile turned into a sly one as those chocolate and caramel eyes sparkled with a new idea. "It's not exactly curing him of all his ailments, but it's something that might put him in better spirits."
"What are you planning?" Sarah asked, amused. It always seemed like when things were hopeless, these two found some way to bring it all back. That was one of the many reasons why she loved being around the two of them.
"We're cupids," Will told her. "Our one job is spreading love." Then he went to grab his coat that had been hanging on a rack by the door. "And that's one thing we're going to do."
"We already did that," Cameron looked at them confused. "Melvin and Mateo are together. There's no denying that."
"He's talking about another type of love," Obasi shook his head. Will couldn't give a straight answer to save his life. Not when he got excited, at least.
"What type?" Cameron asked. They looked to Will again to see the man with a warm expression.
"The family kind," Will answered, offering his hand for the cupid to hold. "And Melvin has quite the number of ones that he calls family."
