The next day, Sari met up with Mira, Scarlet, and Tacia for coffee. As they chatted, Sari’s mind kept drifting, her expression distant and confused. Noticing her silence, Mira gently nudged her, “Sari, you okay?”
Sari looked up, biting her lip as if debating whether to say something. Finally, she sighed and spoke up.
“I… I think I saw Gio last week. At the church. Pero hindi ako sure kung siya ba talaga yun”
Scarlet exchanged a quick glance with Mira and Tacia, who both gave subtle nods, understanding that Sari didn’t yet know the truth. They each felt the weight of keeping this secret.
Mira reached over and put a comforting hand on Sari’s. “baka kamukha lang. Tulad nga nang sabi mo dati diba? Akala mo siya pero hindi pala.”
Sari frowned, her fingers tracing the rim of her coffee cup. “Ewan ko ba… hindi ko naman gusto na makita siya ulit. pero bakit parang may nag hihila sa'kin na kailangan ko siyang makita at marinig lahat ng kasagutan sa mga tanong ko, hindi kaya bumalik na talaga siya?”
Tacia leaned in, her voice soft and reassuring. “Even if she were back, maybe she’s just taking time. You know how Gio is… she likes to plan things out. She’d want to make it special for you if she were here.”
Scarlet chimed in, her tone gentle but firm, “kilala mo si Gio, Sari. Kung bumalik na nga talaga siya, edi sana pinuntahan Kana niya diba?. She wouldn’t hide from you without a good reason.”
Sari took a deep breath, trying to process what they were saying. “I just… I guess I’m afraid. It’s been so long, and I don’t know if things would be the same, you know? What if I finally see her, and it’s different?”
Mira squeezed her hand gently. “Listen, if Gio is here, it’s because she wants to be. And if she wants to be here, that means she’s ready to see you. Don’t doubt that.”
Scarlet added, “andito kami, Sari. Whatever happens, we’re here for you, okay?”
Just as Sari was starting to relax with her friends, her phone rang. She glanced down, seeing her mom’s name on the screen, and quickly answered.
“Mom? Bakit po?” she asked, but her heart sank at the worried tone on the other end.
“Sari, si Miyuki… ang taas ng lagnat,” her mom said, her voice shaky. “I’ve tried to bring it down, but nothing’s working. I think you should come right away.”
Sari’s heart pounded, and panic immediately set in. “Okay, uuwi na po. Please keep a cool compress on her and keep me updated,” she replied, trying to sound calm, though her mind was racing.
As she hung up, Mira, Scarlet, and Tacia noticed the change in her expression. Scarlet leaned forward, worry etched across her face. “Sari, what happened?”
Sari swallowed hard, her voice trembling. “Si Miyuki. Mataas daw ang lagnat, and I need to get home.”
Without hesitation, Mira reached for Sari’s bag, already helping her gather her things. “Sasama kami sayo,” she said firmly.
Tacia placed a comforting hand on Sari’s shoulder, her voice calm but supportive. “Miyuki’s strong, Sari. We’ll help however we can. Let’s get to her.”
They rushed out together, Scarlet wrapping an arm around Sari as they headed to the car. Sari’s mind was already focused on Miyuki, her fear growing by the second.
The drive felt endless, with Mira doing her best to keep Sari reassured as Tacia held her hand, grounding her through the panic.
When they finally arrived, Sari dashed into the house, with her friends close behind. Her mom was in the living room, holding a weak-looking Miyuki, who was curled up, her cheeks flushed from the fever.
Sari’s heart broke at the sight, and she knelt beside her daughter, gently brushing her hair back.
“Miyuki, baby, I’m here,” she whispered, trying to keep her voice steady as she checked her temperature.
Scarlet and Tacia shared a concerned glance, both ready to help however they could. Sari’s mom explained, “okay pa naman siya kanina. Tapos biglang nang hina.”
Sari nodded, her instincts taking over. She looked at her friends, a new determination in her eyes.
“Can one of you call the hospital? I think we need to take her in if this fever doesn’t drop soon.”
Mira gave a reassuring nod, immediately pulling out her phone. Tacia and Scarlet each stayed by Sari’s side, providing silent support as she comforted Miyuki, hoping for her fever to break.
