A week had passed since Miyuki’s symptoms had intensified, and Sari had barely left her daughter’s side. She was exhausted, emotionally drained, and entirely focused on Miyuki’s care.
So when her phone rang, and she saw it was her mother, she picked up, grateful for the comforting voice of family.
“Hi, Mom,” Sari said, trying to sound steady.
“Hi, anak,” her mother replied gently. “kamusta na ang apo namin?.”
Sari took a deep breath, her heart heavy with the weight of her daughter’s condition.
“Sa ngayon po mahina parin. Pero pinipilit niyang maging malakas, the doctors are doing everything they can,” Sari explained, her voice faltering slightly.“mabuti naman,” her mother said softly. “bukas kami pupunta para maka tulog ka ng maayos.”
Sari’s eyes welled up, but she blinked away the tears. “sige po Mom.”
There was a brief silence on the line, and then her mother added, “pero anak.. Si Gio dalawang araw ng andito sa labas ng bahay, hinihintay ka”
Sari felt a rush of emotions at the mention of Gio’s name. “si Gio?” she asked, her heart racing. “hayaan mo nalang siya Mom. Mapapagod din yan”
In the background, Tacia, Mira, and Scarlet were listening intently, their expressions filled with guilt. They had known about Gio’s presence but had chosen to keep it a secret from Sari.
“Anak. Hindi naman sa kinakampihan ko si Gio, pero pwde bang bigyan mo siya ng chance para maka usap ka?” her mother said carefully. “naaawa na kami sa kaniya, halata naman na pinag sisihan niya yung nangyari eh”
Sari bit her lip, her mind swirling with conflicting thoughts. She longed to see Gio, but the pain of their past still stung. “Mom. Mas masakit pa diyan ang dinanas ko noon. Kaya tama lang yan na siya naman ang masaktan.”
Tacia exchanged worried glances with Mira and Scarlet, each of them feeling the weight of Sari’s hurt. They had all witnessed the way Sari had struggled with her feelings for Gio, and they hadn’t wanted to add to her pain by bringing Gio’s presence into the mix.
Her mother tried to intervene. “ikaw bahala Sari. Just remember that it’s important to talk about your feelings, especially with someone who cares about you.”
The conversation hung heavy in the air, filled with unspoken words and unresolved feelings.
Sari felt a mixture of anger and sadness, but deep down, she also felt a flicker of hope at the thought of seeing Gio again.
“Mom, I need some time to think,” Sari finally said, her voice steadier now. “Can I call you back later?”
“Of course, sweetheart. Just remember, I’m here for you,” her mother replied.
After they hung up, Sari turned to her friends, who stood nearby, their faces etched with concern.
After the tense call with her mother, Sari stood by the window, staring out at the busy hospital grounds.
Her mind was racing with thoughts of Gio memories, pain, unresolved feelings. Just then, Tacia entered the room, her expression serious but compassionate.
“Sari,” she said softly, stepping closer. “I know things are really complicated right now, but can I suggest something?”
Sari turned to face her, her arms crossed defensively. “What is it, Tacia?”
“bakit hindi mo bigyan ng isang pagkakataon si Gio?” Tacia proposed gently. “I know the past has been tough for you both, but maybe listening to her explanation could bring some closure or even a new beginning.”
Sari sighed, running a hand through her hair in frustration. “Hindi mo naiintindihan, Tacia. It’s not that simple. There’s so much hurt between us. I don’t even know if I can trust her again.”
“I get that,” Tacia replied, her voice earnest. “But people change, and sometimes they deserve a chance to explain themselves. Maybe there are things you don’t know things she wants to say to you.”
Sari looked down, contemplating Tacia’s words. “Paano ko nga papakinggan kung yung mga sugat na yun' ay hindi pa tuluyang nag hilom?”
“That’s a risk,” Tacia acknowledged. “But staying in the dark could hurt you even more. It might help to understand her side, to know why she did what she did. You’ve been through so much already; maybe this could be a step toward healing.”
Mira and Scarlet entered the room, sensing the heaviness in the air. They exchanged glances, knowing Tacia was trying to help.
“Sari, tama si Tacia,” Mira added, her tone gentle. “Sari isipin mong anak din ni Gio si Yuki, ang hirap ng kalagayan ng anak niyo ngayon. Sana maisip mo din na kailangang makilala ni Yuki ang Mama niya.”
Scarlet nodded. “karapatan din ni Gio, na makilala ang anak niya. Habang hindi pa huli ang lahat.”
Sari felt the weight of their support and the pressure of the decision before her. She took a deep breath, looking back at Tacia. “I don’t know if I’m ready for that.”
“That’s okay,” Tacia said, stepping closer. “Just think about it. You don’t have to decide right now. Just know that I believe you deserve to have your feelings heard whether it’s with Gio or just with us.”
As Sari absorbed her friends' words, she realized how much she wanted to be free of the burdens of the past. Maybe, just maybe, listening to Gio could bring her the clarity she needed to move forward.
