Gab, visibly emotional, pleaded with Sari to meet her. She couldn’t bear seeing Gio so heartbroken and needed Sari to understand the past. In a trembling voice, Gab explained the real reason why Gio had stayed silent six years ago.
Gab took a deep breath as she looked at Sari, her eyes filled with desperation. "Sari," she began, her voice barely a whisper. "I need you to hear this for Gio's sake. Hindi ko na kayang makitang nasasaktan ang kapatid ko, sobrang naawa na ako sa kaniya."
Sari’s expression tightened, hesitant. "Ate Gab, I don’t know if I can… After everything, hindi ko alam kung kaya ko bang makinig," she replied, her tone wavering between frustration and pain.
"But you deserve to know," Gab said firmly, stepping closer. "Six years ago, Gio didn’t just leave without a reason. Ang totoo niyan, limang buwan palang siya sa Thailand. Nung sinabi niya ang plano niya, na uuwi daw siya para i surprise ka sa anniversary niyo. Mismong araw na dapat ay mag po-propose din siya."
Sari’s face softened as she took in Gab’s words. "Propose?" she whispered, caught off guard. "She never told me… totoo ba? pero bakit hindi siya umuwi? bakit hindi niya ako binalikan?."
Gab shook her head, her voice cracking with emotion. "No, Sari. Gio wanted to surprise you, to make a new start with you. But just when she was ready to come home… there was an accident."
Sari looked down, her hands clenched tightly. "An accident?"
"Yes," Gab replied, her voice thick with grief. "It wasn’t just the accident that kept her away, though. mom…" She hesitated, gathering her strength to continue.
" mom took advantage of that moment. She never wanted Gio to be with you and used the accident to control her. She told Gio to stay away from you, to focus on ‘rebuilding her life’ without you. And Gio… she was too broken to fight back."
Gab nodded, reaching out to touch Sari’s arm gently. "She’s been living with that regret every day. She never stopped loving you, Sari. Not for a second. And now, every time I see her, I see the same hurt she’s carried all these years. I can’t bear it."
Tears slid down Sari’s cheeks, her voice barely audible. "Why didn’t she tell me? bakit hindi niya sinabi agad?"
"Because she thought you’d moved on," Gab replied, a tear escaping her own eye. "And maybe she was afraid… afraid you wouldn’t forgive her."
Gab’s voice trembled as she continued, "There’s more, Sari… something I only found out recently." She paused, her voice thick with emotion. "After that accident, Gio was in a coma… for five years."
Sari’s breath hitched, her face paling. "A… coma?" She could barely process it, her hands beginning to shake.
"Yes," Gab whispered, tears in her own eyes. "I didn’t know either. The last time I spoke to her was when she told me she was coming back to surprise you. After that, nothing. I kept reaching out, kahit ilang beses kong tinanong si mom wala akong sagot na nakuha mula sa kaniya. I only found out years later what had really happened."
Sari felt her knees go weak as she tried to grasp what Gab was saying. "She was in a coma all that time… and I thought she’d just left me." She buried her face in her hands, her body trembling with sobs. "All these years… I thought she’d just… left."
Gab wrapped her arms around Sari, holding her tightly. "She never left you by choice. When she woke up, she was devastated. She thought too much time had passed, that you would’ve moved on… She wanted you to be happy, even if it meant letting you go."
"Nung mga panahon na mas kailangan ako ni Gio. Yun din pala yung panahon na galit na galit ako sa kaniya" Sari whispered through her tears, a new urgency rising in her chest.
Gab hesitated, looking away. "She’s leaving, Sari. She has a flight to the U.S. today. She’s going there to start over, to try and forget… everything. To forget you."
Sari’s heart pounded as she took in Gab’s words. Without a second thought, she wiped her tears and turned toward the door, her voice shaking but resolute. "Hindi. Hindi na'ko papayag na iwan niya ulit ako"
As Sari dashed out, her tears mixed with determination, she hurried through the streets, her mind racing with memories, regrets, and a deep, desperate longing. She couldn’t lose Gio again not now, not after everything they’d been through.
At the airport, breathless and fighting back tears, Sari scanned the crowd frantically, her voice barely a whisper as she called out, "Gio… please, wait…"
