Gio hesitated outside Miyuki's hospital room, her heart racing. She hadn’t planned to enter alone, but seeing the young girl there, quietly drawing in her bed, something drew her in. She took a deep breath, slowly opening the door and stepping inside.
Miyuki looked up, her face brightening with a smile. “Hi, my friend” she greeted warmly, her innocence and enthusiasm bringing a warmth to Gio's heart.
“Hi, Miyuki,” Gio replied, returning her smile as she moved closer. “What are you drawing?”
“It’s me and Yuki,” Miyuki said, showing her picture of herself and her beloved stuffed animal. “We’re going on another adventure.”
Gio chuckled, settling into the chair next to her. “I’m glad Yuki is there to protect you. You’re both very brave.”
As they talked, Gio’s eyes fell on a familiar piece of jewelry on Miyuki’s wrist a delicate, silver bracelet with a tiny charm.
Her heart skipped a beat. She recognized it immediately. It was the bracelet she’d given Sari years ago when they were young, when their love was still new. Sari had told her she’d keep it forever, as a reminder of their promise.
Seeing it here, on Miyuki’s wrist, left Gio speechless for a moment. “Miyuki… your bracelet… it’s beautiful,” Gio said softly, reaching out to touch it gently.
Miyuki looked down at it, a small, proud smile on her face. “My mommy gave it to me. She said it’s really special. It’s from someone she loves a lot.”
Gio’s throat tightened, hearing those words. She felt the weight of Sari’s promise all over again, and it struck her how deeply connected she still was to this little girl.
It was as though, despite all the time and distance, Sari had held onto that piece of their past.
“Your mommy is right,” Gio whispered, her eyes misting. “It’s very special.”
Miyuki noticed Gio’s soft expression and tilted her head. “Did you know my mommy?”
Gio managed a small smile. “Yes, I knew her very well.” Her voice was tender, filled with nostalgia and longing. “She’s a wonderful person. She loves you so much, Miyuki. You’re very lucky.”
Miyuki nodded, hugging Yuki close to her. “I know. She tells me stories sometimes, about her past and her friends. Maybe you’re one of them?”
Gio smiled through her tears, touched by the innocence in Miyuki’s question. “Maybe, sweetie. Maybe.”
As Gio sat beside Miyuki, gently holding the bracelet and lost in thought, the door suddenly opened.
Sari walked in with Travis by her side, carrying a bag of food and supplies. The moment her eyes met Gio’s, she froze, her face paling in shock.
She hadn’t expected Gio to be there, let alone sitting so close to Miyuki.
“Sari…” Gio murmured, rising from the chair, taken aback. She couldn’t hide the mix of emotions on her face confusion, hurt, and a glimmer of hope.
Miyuki’s face lit up at the sight of her mother. “Mommy!” she called out, reaching her arms toward Sari.
Gio’s heart skipped a beat as she processed the word Miyuki had just said. Mommy.
She turned her gaze back to Sari, the questions swirling in her mind growing sharper.
But before Gio could say a word, Sari’s expression hardened, determination taking over as she quickly shielded her feelings.
“Sari,” Gio began, glancing back at Miyuki, who was still beaming at her mother. “Is she…? yung IVF nag work ba?” Gio’s voice was filled with questions, hope and suspicion mixing into one.
But Sari cut her off, her voice steady though her eyes betrayed the strain. “Hindi, Gio. Negative ang results nun” she replied firmly.
Glancing over at Travis. “Si Travis siya ang ama ni Yuki.” She stepped closer to Travis, instinctively clinging to his presence to avoid Gio’s questions.
Gio’s face fell, her eyes widening in confusion as she looked between Sari and Travis, trying to process what she’d just heard.
She opened her mouth, wanting to ask more, but the words wouldn’t come. The idea that Travis was Miyuki’s father didn’t quite make sense, yet Sari’s tone left no room for argument.
Travis, sensing the tension, gave Gio a polite nod and put a comforting hand on Sari’s shoulder. “We just came to check in on Miyuki,” he said calmly, casting a gentle, supportive look at Sari.
Gio’s mind was reeling, her eyes searching Sari’s face for any sign of the truth, but Sari’s expression remained guarded.
She could feel that there was something Sari wasn’t saying, but she knew pushing wouldn’t get her any closer to understanding.
“Right… of course,” Gio finally replied, forcing a small, sad smile. She turned back to Miyuki, kneeling down beside her and giving her one last tender smile. “Take care, little one. You’re strong, you know that?”
Miyuki nodded, her innocent face lighting up. “Thank you, my friend! Will you visit again?”
Gio hesitated, glancing at Sari, who was watching her with a guarded, tense expression. “Maybe,” she said softly, standing up and stepping back, casting one last look at Sari.
“Sana maipaliwanag mo kung bakit suot ni Yuki ang bracelet na bigay ko dati sayo.”
With that, Gio walked out of the room, her heart heavy, and a thousand questions still unanswered.
Once she was gone, Sari released a shaky breath, her resolve wavering. She knew the truth was bound to come out eventually, but today wasn’t the day she could face it not yet.
