After a week away, Miyuki finally returned home, bringing a sense of relief to Sari and her parents. To celebrate, Sari decided to have a family dinner, eager to share a joyful evening together.
As they settled around the table, laughter and conversation flowed. Miyuki seemed happy and animated, her cheeks glowing with excitement.
But just as they were finishing up, she suddenly clutched her stomach, her face tightening in pain. Sari noticed immediately, her smile vanishing as she asked, "Miyuki, anak, are you okay?"
Before Miyuki could answer, a thin trickle of blood began to drip from her nose, catching everyone off guard. Sari’s mother gasped, her hand covering her mouth, while Sari rushed over to Miyuki, grabbing a napkin to press to her nose.
"Miyuki, sweetheart, let’s get you to the doctor," Sari said, her voice tight with worry as she held her daughter close, trying to soothe her.
Her father stood by with a worried frown, while Sari’s mother gently placed a hand on Miyuki’s shoulder, whispering reassurances.
The once-celebratory dinner had turned into a moment of deep concern, the family’s joy overshadowed by fear for Miyuki’s health.
They knew they needed answers, and Sari, holding back tears, promised her daughter they would find out what was wrong and make sure she was safe.
Sari’s heart pounded as she sat beside her mother in the doctor’s office, clutching her hands together to keep them from shaking.
She had spent the past three days in a state of constant worry, praying that Miyuki’s symptoms might have a simple explanation.
But the doctor’s expression was serious, his voice measured as he explained, “I’m so sorry, Sari… but Miyuki has acute lymphoblastic leukemia.”
Sari felt the words hit her like a blow. She couldn’t breathe, the room spinning as her mother reached out, steadying her.
Tears sprang to Sari’s eyes, and she barely heard the doctor’s explanations about treatments and next steps.
All she could think of was her sweet daughter, the vibrant, joyful child who now faced a battle she never could’ve imagined.
As she struggled to hold herself together, her mother wrapped an arm around her, whispering, “anak, malalagpasan din natin to. Malakas si Yuki at alam kong lalaban siya.”
Sari’s mind swam with disbelief and dread as she absorbed the doctor’s words, each one landing heavily in her heart.
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She struggled to hold onto her composure, her hands cold and trembling in her lap. All the memories of Miyuki’s laughter, her bright eyes.
Her boundless energy flooded her mind, making the diagnosis feel like an impossibility. How could someone so full of life be facing something so devastating?
As the doctor continued, explaining treatment plans and options, Sari’s mother sat beside her, gently rubbing her back, offering silent strength.
“We’ll need to start immediately,” the doctor said gently, understanding the gravity of what Sari was going through. “But I want you to know, Sari, that we’ll do everything we can to give Miyuki the best chance.”
Sari tried to focus, but her vision blurred, tears spilling down her cheeks despite her efforts to stay strong. She choked out,
“napaka bata pa ng anak ko… napaka bata niya pa para mag kasakit ng ganyan.” Her mother held her closer, her own face etched with sorrow yet.
Finally, when they left the doctor’s office, Sari’s mother kept an arm around her as they walked down the hospital corridor in silence.
Sari felt as if she were moving through a fog, her thoughts only on Miyuki. “Mom,” she whispered, her voice breaking, “pa'no ko sasabihin kay Yuki? kung kahit ako walang lakas ng loob para sabihin sa kaniya ang sakit niya?”
Her mother looked at her with gentle, unwavering eyes, speaking softly but firmly.
“One day at a time, Sari. Right now, all we can do is be there for her, and show her our love. She needs to feel safe and loved and she has you for that.”
Taking a deep, steadying breath, Sari nodded, letting her mother’s words sink in. She didn’t know how she would find the strength, but for Miyuki, she would.
When Tacia’s phone rang, she sensed Sari’s unease before she even picked up. Meeting up quickly, she could see the weight of worry in Sari’s eyes. Without wasting a second, Sari explained Miyuki’s diagnosis, her voice wavering, barely above a whisper.
Tacia, a doctor herself, felt a knot tighten in her chest, speechless as Sari’s words sank in.
Looking at her friend, Sari’s gaze filled with a desperate hope, she asked, “Tacia… can Miyuki survive this?” Her voice was thin, almost pleading, as if hoping Tacia would give her a miracle to hold onto.
Tacia took a breath, searching for the gentlest way to respond. She wished she could offer more, but her honesty couldn’t bear to give Sari false hope.
“Sari… I wish I could tell you it would be easy, but this type of leukemia is… very serious.” Her words were soft, yet Sari could feel the gravity of their meaning.
As Tacia shared the difficult truth, Sari’s emotions surged uncontrollably. Her hands began to tremble, and her eyes filled with fresh tears.
The thought of losing Miyuki, her precious daughter, was more than she could bear. Suddenly, the hopelessness inside her boiled over.
"No! You’re telling me… there’s nothing we can do? gagaling ang anak ko!" Sari’s voice rose, breaking into a strained, desperate cry. Her words echoed in the quiet space, and Tacia, taken aback, felt a lump rise in her throat.
Sari’s hands flew to her face, tears streaming down as she tried to hold herself together. "Hindi ko kaya… Tacia," she sobbed, her voice cracking with the weight of her grief. "Sa kanya na umikot ang mundo ko…"
Tacia’s own eyes glistened with unshed tears, but she stayed close, gently reaching out to Sari, offering her a steady presence amid her heartbreak.
“I know, Sari. I know it feels impossible. Pero ngayon kailangan mo maging malakas, at matapang para kay Yuki.”
As Sari’s sobs softened, Tacia continued to hold her hand, staying close, offering what comfort she could while Sari’s heart began to face the painful reality.
