Author's POV:
Vidharth's fingers flew across his laptop keys, his mind racing with escape strategies.
Kanvi, who looked bright in a crimson gown, chatted animatedly with her friends. Her laughter echoed through the room, a deliberate attempt to end suspicion.
Winter settled into the plush sofa, her eyes sparkling. "You won't believe what Ean did for me. He left everything – his family, his legacy – for me."
Katherine's gaze widened. "Blimey, Winter! You're kidding!"
Winter shook her head, a soft smile spreading. "I misunderstood him, thought he was abandoning me. But he chose me, Kathie. Can you imagine?"
Kanvi leaned forward, her interest genuine. "That's astonishing. Ean's always been mysterious."
Vidharth's ears perked up at Katherine's voice, his focus drifting from his laptop.
"I know, right?" Winter continued. "He's been tracking my period cycle, Kathie. Can you believe it?"
Katherine's laughter pealed. "Good Lord, Winter! He's smitten!"
Kanvi chuckled. "Sounds like Ean's gone all out for you, Winter."
Vidharth's eyes met Kanvi's, a silent understanding passing between them. Their friends' carefree conversation was a stark contrast to their confinement.
As the evening wore on, Vidharth's mind whirred with plans. He would find a way to free Kanvi and himself, no matter the cost.
Winter's brow furrowed as Katherine turned to fetch something, her movements awkward. The HD video call revealed a faint limp.
"Wicked shoes, Kate?" Winter teased.
Katherine's flush deepened. "Just a minor mishap."
Winter's eyes narrowed. "Who's been keeping you up at night, hmm?"
Katherine's embarrassment was palpable. "No one, Winter. Just...a one-night stand."
Vidharth's grip on his laptop tightened, his eyes snapping shut. His breathing quickened, memories of rejected advances and helpless longing resurfacing.
He recalled the nights he'd spent beside Katherine, his desire for her bubbling, yet unanswered. His hands had been tied, bound by his own rejection.
Kanvi's concerned glance flicked to Vidharth, sensing his tension.
Winter's probing continued. "A one-night stand, Kathie? You're not exactly the type."
Katherine's laughter was forced. "Desperate times, desperate measures."
Vidharth's jaw clenched, his mind racing. Had Katherine truly moved on, or was this a facade?
As the conversation flowed, Vidharth's turmoil intensified. His anger and hurt wrestled with the longing he thought he'd extinguished.
Kanvi's gentle touch on his arm was a lifeline, anchoring him to the present.
"Vidharth Bhai, are you alright?" she whispered.
He nodded, his eyes still closed, struggling to reclaim his composure. The call ended, leaving Vidharth with unsettling questions.
Katherine's breath caught as Kanvi mentioned Vidharth's name. Her eyes widened, unprepared for the revelation. Vidharth, beside Kanvi, all this time?
"Sorry, girls, I have something to attend to," Katherine said hastily, ending the call.
Winter and Kanvi exchanged puzzled glances. "Strange," Winter murmured and ended the call.
