"Magic made them mates. Love made them stronger. Family made them whole."
"Chan? Minho? Binnie?" Felix called out, voice trembling as he trudged deeper into the forest. "Where are you guys?"
No answer. Just the sound of wind rustling the trees and his own heartbeat thudding in his ears. His phone was dead, his water bottle empty, and his stomach hadn't stopped growling for hours. He didn't know how he'd wandered this far. One second, they were exploring a little path off the road near the venue in Japan, and the next... he was alone.
He stumbled over a root and dropped to his knees with a soft cry. His vision blurred.
"I shouldn't've gone so far..." he muttered.
A soft rustle nearby made him freeze.
"Hyung?" he asked, hopefully.
But what stepped out of the trees wasn't one of his brothers.
It was a fox. No, not just any fox. This one had nine tails.
Felix blinked slowly. "Am I... dreaming?"
The fox stared at him with glowing amber eyes, elegant and graceful, but before he could even react—
Everything went black.
Felix gasped awake. The bed under him was soft and warm, the air smelled like herbs and something sweet. Wood-paneled walls, soft curtains, cozy lighting. He sat up, only to freeze when he saw a stranger sitting at the foot of the bed.
A very handsome stranger.
"Wh-who are you?" Felix whispered.
The guy smiled gently. "You're awake. That's good. You passed out in the forest."
Felix stared at him. "Did you bring me here?"
"I did," the guy said. "My name's Jeongin."
Felix rubbed his eyes. "I swear... I saw a fox. It had nine tails."
"You did," Jeongin said simply.
Felix's eyes widened. "Wait. What?"
Jeongin stood slowly. "Don't freak out, okay?" He took a deep breath, and in the blink of an eye—his body shimmered with golden light—and he shifted.
Standing where Jeongin had been was the same nine-tailed fox.
Felix's jaw dropped. "No way..."
A moment later, the fox transformed back into the man, Jeongin brushing imaginary dust off his sleeve like nothing happened.
"I'm a kitsune," he said.
Felix blinked fast. "A what?"
"A magical fox spirit. We live long lives, have powers tied to nature, and... sometimes, we find mates."
Felix's brows furrowed. "Mates?"
Jeongin nodded. "When a kitsune meets the person they're destined for, their souls recognize each other. I felt it the moment I saw you. I know you're my mate."
Felix's cheeks turned pink. "O-okay, that's... a lot. You just met me."
Jeongin gave a soft chuckle. "I know how it sounds. But I won't do anything you don't want. I'll wait until you feel the same, and if you never do, that's okay too."
Felix sat back against the pillows, still processing. "If I did... feel the same. What would that mean?"
Jeongin met his eyes. "If we mated—if I claimed you—you'd turn into a kitsune too. You'd gain powers. Long life. A tail or two, depending on your strength."
