"Seven vampire brothers. One fearless little boy. A family like no other."
The black car cut through the forest road like a shadow, sleek and silent, tires whispering over cracked asphalt. Inside, the seven vampire brothers sat in varying degrees of boredom, the windows tinted so dark not even the moonlight could break through.
Chan tapped the steering wheel with his fingers. "Finally. We'll be home in less than an hour."
Minho stretched in the backseat. "Remind me again why we had to stay gone so long?"
"Because someone," Jisung muttered, side-eying Hyunjin, "had to light that human village on fire and draw attention."
Hyunjin gasped, all offense. "That was one time. And I apologized. Twice."
"You apologized to the trees," Seungmin deadpanned.
"They were scorched!"
Jeongin sighed, forehead against the glass. "I just want to get back to my bed. And my plants. Did anyone water them?"
"No," Changbin said. "They're dead. Like your social life."
Chan chuckled, opening his mouth to retort—but then hit the brakes. Hard.
The car screeched to a halt. Everyone lurched forward in their seats, voices overlapping.
"What the hell—"
"Chan?!"
"What's going on?"
Chan didn't answer. He was already out of the car, door hanging open as he walked into the ditch beside the road. The others followed quickly, silent now, their senses heightened.
They saw her.
A woman, collapsed against a tree. Her skin was too pale. Her lips a sickly blue. Flies swarmed around her lifeless face. But what made their cold hearts still was the tiny body curled beside her.
A little boy.
He couldn't have been older than two. Blonde curls tangled and dirty, cheeks streaked with dried tears, clothes stiff with dirt. He sat beside her with one hand on her arm, sniffling, hiccuping.
"Mama wake up," he mumbled. "Mama wake."
Jisung took a sharp breath. "Shit."
Seungmin crouched down, eyes narrowing. "She's been dead for a week," he murmured. "The boy's heartbeat is weak. He's hungry. Probably hasn't eaten in days."
Minho moved closer. "He survived out here alone?"
"Looks like it," Chan said quietly. His gaze never left the toddler. "We're taking him."
"What about the woman?" Changbin asked.
"We'll take her too," Chan replied. "She deserves more than being left for the crows."
The toddler looked up at them then, big brown eyes swimming with confusion and tears. He sucked on his thumb and leaned into the woman's side again.
"Felix," he whispered. "Mama sleepin'. Felix wait. Be good boy."
Hyunjin's hand went to his chest. "His name's Felix."
Seungmin held out his arms. "Felix," he said softly. "Come here, baby. We'll help."
Felix blinked. "Help Mama?"
"We'll help both of you," Seungmin promised.
Felix hesitated, then slowly reached out, crawling into Seungmin's arms with a whimper.
