"Who knew the bond that would save him would also save the vampire kingdom."

Minho crept through the dense forest, his steps soundless as he glided between the trees. Jeongin was a few feet behind, grumbling quietly to himself.

"We've been out here for hours. Can't we just snatch a deer and be done with it?"

Minho shot him a glare over his shoulder. "He needs blood, Jeongin. Real blood. Human. Not some skittish forest creature."

"I know, I know," Jeongin muttered, brushing a low branch out of his way. "It's just—this is boring."

A breeze shifted, and Jeongin froze mid-step. His nose twitched.

"Wait... do you smell that?"

Minho stopped and turned. "Smell what?"

Jeongin's eyes were wide now. "Sugar. Sunshine. And... something else." He darted toward the clearing just ahead, crouching behind a thick bush. "There."

Minho followed, crouching beside his brother to peer through the leaves. In the moonlight stood a human boy—blonde hair tousled by the wind, freckles scattered like stardust across pale cheeks. He was humming quietly to himself, plucking wildflowers.

"He's pretty," Jeongin whispered.

Minho rolled his eyes. "You say that about every human we see."

"No, this one's different," Jeongin insisted. He straightened. "I'm taking him."

"Jeongin—"

Too late. Jeongin moved fast, silent as a shadow. The human didn't even have time to scream—just a gasp before Jeongin struck him gently at the neck and caught him as he slumped forward.

"Easy," Jeongin muttered, adjusting the boy over his shoulder. "Don't drop the pretty thing."

Minho wrinkled his nose as the scent hit him fully—sweet, warm, electric.

His eyes widened. "Wait."

"What?" Jeongin turned slightly, confused.

Minho stepped closer, inhaling deeply. "That scent. That's not just any human."

Jeongin blinked. "Yeah, I said he smells good."

"No, Jeongin," Minho said, his voice urgent now. "I think you found him."

"Him who?"

Minho gave him a look. "The human. The one who's supposed to save Chan."

Jeongin stared at him, then looked down at the boy slung over his shoulder. "This little thing?"

"Don't be an idiot," Minho snapped. "Take him. Now. We need to get him to the castle. If we're right..."

Jeongin nodded quickly. "Yeah. Yeah, okay."

They moved fast, shadows slicing through the forest as they ran.

When they burst into the vampire castle, servants scattered in surprise. Minho led the way through the stone halls, the human still unconscious in Jeongin's arms.

"Get the Seer," Minho barked to a nearby guard.

Moments later, an ancient vampire with clouded eyes entered the throne room. She tilted her head, sniffing the air.

"You brought him."

Jeongin frowned. "You knew?"

"I've known for centuries he would come." The Seer's voice was a rasp. "He is the only one who can give the king what he needs."
