One year later

The penthouse was silent except for the sizzling of bacon in the pan. Matt stood at the stove, making us breakfast while I prepared the transcripts for court.

"You okay?" I asked, hugging him from behind.

"Yeah," he breathed out. "I am okay."

"Whatever happened that night wasn't your fault, remember that," I let go of him and set the plates on the table.

Natalie came out of her room at the smell of food, ready in her school uniform. We were going to drop her off to school after the court hearing, Matt didn't want her near that bastard we were going to send to jail today but her therapist had insisted, Natalie needed closure.

"Good morning princess," I kissed her forehead, placing her plate of breakfast in front of her.

"Thanks," she mumbled, eating her breakfast.

A few days after Foggy's death, it came out in one of her therapy sessions that she used to talk to him about disappearing in the blip. They used to talk about it everyday and she was eventually feeling better but then he died and it brought a setback to her progress. What she wouldn't reveal is why she insisted on only talking with Foggy about that matter. Others things that came out were the fact that she hated going to school. Most of her friends were in senior classes, older than her and she should have been at their level too but she was still younger and that frustrated her.

"Remember, you are not allowed to threaten him in the courtroom, no matter how angry you are," I reminded her.

"I know mom," she replied quickly.

"Will aunty Karen be there?" she asked.

"I am sure she will," I said with a smile.

Karen had left for San Francisco after the tragedy, never to call or text.

And as a result of that, Natalie had lost her two favourite people in a matter of days.

We left for court a few minutes later. The outside of the courtroom had been swarmed by reporters who wanted a statement. Matt took Natalie through the back door to allow her not to be swarmed by the reporters.

I walked through the front doors, reporters throwing questions at me but I kept on ignoring them.  I handed over the transcripts to the prosecutor Nolan Price. He was aiming for he death penalty and not life imprisonment because the later meant that Pointdexter could easily escape. Prison walls weren't strong enough to hold a person like that.

" I have added some more evidence and missed out facts from the first day of trail. All backed up by witnesses," I said as we stood outside the courtroom.

"I did not think you could gather more evidence," he mumbled, amazed.

I simply smiled in reply. It was a mix of evidence. Some real and some fabricated using AI. The real ones were dug up by my mafia connections and the AI ones were created by my computer expert. The death penalty seemed more of a possibility now, even though multiple people were still protesting against it.

"Thank goodness we have no jury, if we did, the penalty would have been completely off the table. People are too emotional," I commented. "See you inside Price."

I walked into the courtroom sitting beside Matt and Natalie.

"How about we go get some sushi after this?" I asked Natalie, wrapping my arm around her shoulder.

"I though I had to go to school," she looked up at me.

"Eh, you can miss one day. You have been working extra hard for months now. You need a break."

"Okay then. Ten points to you mom," she smiled.

I high-fived myself internally. I now had more points than Matt. Well of course I wanted her to rest but I also wanted my points. Lately, Natalie has been generous with her points and so we have been taking full advantage of that.

The trial started and Matt was called to the stand. He was speaking as the door opened once again. I looked back and my eyes met Karen's. We nodded at each other before I turned back to the front.

"Your wish got answered," I whispered to Natalie.

She looked back and her face lit up.

Pointdexter was sentenced to life in prison and while that was enough for everyone in that courtroom, it wasn't enough for me and Price. Why keep such a horrible excuse of a human being alive? He doesn't have any rights, animals don't and yet he gets to live? Ridiculous!

After the sentencing Matt and Karen found each other to have a talk.

"Let them talk and then you can go say hi," I brushed Natalie's hair back gently.

"Mom, someone keeps looking at us," she said, tilting her head to the side.

I followed her cue, immediately spotting a man in a black hoodie and a cap covering his face. He looked awfully familiar; a person from a past life. As soon as he spotted me, he turned and walked away.

"Stay here, within your dad's reach," I told her before following that man.

He picked up his speed as he sensed me following him so I resorted to running. I followed him out through the back door but he managed to disappear into the crowd of reporters. I huffed and slipped back inside before the reporters could spot me. On my way back I met Karen.

"Are you staying?" I asked.

" No, going back," she said. "I can't stay here, every memory is painful now."

"I understand. Call if you ever need anything," we hugged each other before she left.

"Did you catch him?" Natalie piped up as I walked up to her and Matt.

"No sweetie, he got away," I sighed.

"Catch who?" Matt asked, confused.

"Some guy was watching us, I ran after him but he disappeared into the crowd. It was weird,"  I shrugged.

Both of us put on our brave faces as we walked with our daughter to the car. Us being watched, possible stalked and kept under surveillance could directly be related to the fact that Wilson Fisk was running for the Mayor of New York and he was determined to take revenge on us, now that he knew our identities. This put all of us in grave danger because the slogan for his campaign was "No more masked vigilantes" ; a direct threat to us.

As I got into the driver's seat I couldn't help but notice Fisk's mural on the wall opposite to the parking lot, his eyes staring daggers at me. Bad times were ahead and we could just hope that everything we spent years building wouldn't suddenly come crashing down.
