Casey walked into the apartment a little after midnight. He was prepared to be quiet and not to wake up the triplets as he checked on them but he noticed the kitchen light was on and he could hear someone. He headed into the kitchen and frowned when he saw Grace sitting at the table, laptop and books spread across the table. She had been staying up late a lot more often doing work and it was starting to worry him, especially since he wondered how late she stayed up while he was at work.

" Grace," Casey sighed. "You should be in bed."

" I have to finish this." Grace mumbled.

" When is it due?" Casey asked her, although he was sure of the answer. She wasn't a procrastinator, she typically worked well in advance, but when she started on a project it could become all-consuming for her.

"On Friday." Grace said. "I'm on a roll though." Grace says.

" That may be true, but you don't have to finish it tonight." Casey says as he closed the laptop on her.

" Daddy," She looked up at him with wide eyes. "I can't believe you just did that." Grace says.

" It will still be there tomorrow." Casey says.

" Yeah, but this momentum could be gone." Grace says.

" Go to bed, Grace." Casey says. more firmly. "It's a school night. We've already talked about this." Casey says sternly.

" I know, but you're supposed to be at work. I didn't know you were going to come home." Grace says.

" I check in more than you know." He reminded her. And it shouldn't matter if I'm at work." Casey says sternly.

" Did you have a bad day at work?" She asked, studying his face. "Was it a kid?" Grace asks Casey.

" Yeah, Herrmann rescued a young boy and he's not doing so well." Casey sighed. "The kid has a mother in jail and a father who is addicted to drugs and probably caused the fire." Casey explains.

" That sounds familiar." Grace smiled weakly. "I'm guessing it brought up old memories for you." Grace says.

" Yeah," Casey sighed as he looked at her. "A few too many." Casey says.

" It wasn't always bad." Grace says with a shrug. "But all my good memories include you, so that's probably not a coincidence." Grace says.

" I should have pulled you , Ellie and Jake out of that house so much sooner." Casey shook his head. "I definitely shouldn't have let them take you three to California." Casey says.

" You did the best you could." Grace said. "You checked in almost every day and I doubt you could have got us away from them. I mean, the state couldn't even do that." Grace says

" I should have tried. You three could have grown up feeling safe and protected. Not going through whatever they put you through." Casey says. "That's probably the biggest regret of my life." Casey says. (Thinking about Ellie's life )

Grace moved to hug him, wrapping her arms around him tightly and burying her head in his chest. "I love you, Dad." Grace said as he held her, his chin resting on the top of her head. "We're here now." Grace says.
