The funeral was a week later and Phil hardly spoke. He didn't cry. He nodded at relatives that offered condolences. His eyes were lonely. And sad. And not their usual flickering pools of light. He stood by me and Jenny and Martyn the entire time. Never letting go of my hand.

The service was nice, it was simple. The casket was closed.

Afterwards, Phil returned back to ours and collapsed on the sofa and fell asleep. Martyn returned to a friend of his after Phil told him he'd rather stay with us. I was worried. Of course I was. He was so sad and there was nothing I could do to change that, to change the fact he lost his last remaining parent. He hadn't been to school. I'd missed most days. PJ and Chris tried cheering him up but left after all they could do was get a weak, forced smile. He hasn't cried since the night she died.

He hasn't spoken since the funeral.

That was four days ago.
