Chapter 32:
Kendall and I spent the majority of the day apart. I spent most my time with his mom, aunt and female cousins in the kitchen gossiping or baking, while he was in the living room doing whatever with the guys. Occasionally I'd see him and his brothers coming to the fridge on a beer run for the guys in the other room. "You can have a beer, Bobby." Kathy offered. I waved off the invite.
"No, it's okay, I'm fine thanks. I don't drink, and even if I did, I can't. I'm on pain killers." I told her. She smiled and nodded not asking any further questions. Kendall came back in once just himself and went behind me to the fridge. He grabbed a wine cooler and opened it and wrapped his arms around me.
"Hey, how the ladies doing in here?!" He asked obviously experiencing a little of a buzz. I giggled as he kissed my cheek. All the women 'awed' or laughed making it even cuter. "Love ya babe!" He shouted as he left the kitchen. I shook my head laughing at how much fun he was having, and myself for that matter.
"So, Bobby, your name short for something?" A cousin of Kendall's asked. I nodded smiling.
"Roberta." I said. They 'oh'ed and 'ah'ed.
"That's a pretty name! Are you named after your dad?" Some other cousin asked. I shook my head.
"I don't know my dad. He never was a part of my life, just my mom and grandparents." I told all who was listening as I took a sip of my Sprite.
"Oh how sad sweetheart." Kendall's grandma said touching my hand. I smiled at her.
"No it's okay. My mom helped me become as strong as I am now." I smiled.
"You could have invited her as well, and your grandparents." Kathy smiled at me. I smiled weakly.
"Uh, I would have loved to. My- my grandparents passed away a year after I graduated high school, my mom two months before I graduated." I said softly. The room got quiet as I felt fifty eyes on me.
"Is that what your tattoo is about on your neck?" Kendall's aunt Karen asked. I smiled and nodded.
"Yeah. My mom died on the date underneath 'Mom' and my grandparents the same." I said.
"If you don't mind my asking... How did they..?" Karen began.
"Karen!" Kathy exclaimed meaning for her to stop.
"No, it's okay. Uh," I felt the lump in my throat come back once I saw those green eyes entering the kitchen again.
"My mom, never had great choices in men, but she still worked hard for me. One day Senior year, she uh, had her boyfriend over and was arguing about something. I just sat quietly at the top of the stairs from our basement and watched this go on, when suddenly he hit her." I said barely audible. It was so quiet anyone could've heard me. Kendall was behind all his family looking at me with sad eyes. He hadn't known the whole details to the story.
"Uh, he just kept hitting her, and I didn't know what to do. I called the police, but he had killed her by then. He hadn't seen me, so I hid in the basement when I heard a gun shot. The cops found me, and told me he had killed himself after taking my moms life." I barely choked out. I wasn't crying except one tear drop down my cheek. I quickly wiped it away as I looked up to see open mouthed people and teary eyes.
"And your grandparents?" Kendall blurted out. I smiled weakly.
"Old age." I said. He nodded and made his way back out to the living room.
"Honey bun, we're glad you're here with us today!" Kendall's grandma told me putting a comforting arm around me.
"Where are your other family members?" Someone asked. I shrugged.
"My mom was an only child and like I said, don't know my dad." So many memories were brought up, that I needed some air.
"If you'll excuse me." I smiled at the ladies. I made my way through the kitchen and back through the living room excusing myself past men and women. I hurried as I got to the front door and opened it to the front porch. There were stairs on either side of the porch so I chose one of them and sat on the very top one. I felt tears run down my face, I didn't know what it was about this family but they were changing me. Scott was right, I was a softie.
