Candice's POV~
The clinking of glasses crashing together for the toast was drowned by the sound of the wind around me. The restaurant was lofted on top of a hill that overlooked the ocean in the far distance. The sun had completely settled by now and the night was filled with bright stars and the raging of the waves from the ocean below.
My head was a mess of bundled up thoughts and the turn of events wasn't being of much help.
Had Emerald knew all along that I worked for her? That I was one of her many employees?
Part of me rejected this theory. The first time we ever saw each other was that day in the coffee shop. There was no way that she knew who I was. Or where I worked for that matter. So she couldn't have found that out into later. I then remembered her shocked expression when I mentioned my promotion earlier. That only proved my assumption wrong— again.
Emerald had no idea that I was her employee and she had been just as shocked to find out about being my boss.
I let out an exasperated sigh as I rubbed my temples.
"Candice?" A voice called out from behind me.
I jumped -startled- by the sudden presence of someone behind me.
"Why did you run off?" Emerald's sharp voice asked.
I gritted my teeth and ignored her question. I felt her soft hands snaking gently but firmly around my waist. I immediately tensed under her touch. I couldn't control my body from heating up and I yearned for her touch all over again.
She slowly pushed my hair off of my shoulder and her soft lips descended over my now exposed shoulder. I closed my eyes and took a deep, calming breath. The wind picked up and I felt Emerald taking a step closer towards me. She began to place open mouthed kisses on my shoulder and I bit back a moan.
I didn't want to feel this way. I didn't want my body to have these type of reactions from her soft lips. I didn't want to feel nervous by having her this close to me.
"Let go of me." I whispered.
"You don't want that." She spoke in my ear.
I felt a chill run up and down my spine. She was right. I didn't want her to let go of me. Which was the main thing scaring me. Why did I feel this way with her? Why was I doing this to Nancy?
"Emerald, someone can walk in on us." I pointed out.
I heard her grumbling some incoherent words but she let go of me nonetheless. I was then embraced by the night's chilly air. I missed Emerald's body heat instantly. I was tempted to turn around and pull her closer towards me.
"Why did you leave earlier?" She questioned in an accusing tone.
"We are nothing Emerald. So forgive me if I ran away from you after I realized the mistake I made." I bit out.
I saw her flinch from my harsh words. Okay, so maybe they did come out harsher than I had intended to. But the damage was done. And it was painted all over Emerald's face.
I wanted to take back my words as soon as they had left my mouth, but I knew it was impossible. You couldn't just spit out venom and take it back the moment it began to cause its damage.
So I completely understood Emerald's reluctance when I tried to reach out to her and she instantly pulled back. Away from me. Like I was a buzzing bee threatening to get closer and sting once again.
"You're right. I didn't know what I was expecting." She laughed humorlessly. "You might want to head back inside. Dinner is about to be served."
She gave me a firm nod before turning around and heading inside the still bustling restaurant.
