Nancy POV~
I came to a complete stop in front of Valerie's high school entrance doors. I still couldn't believe how this girl managed to get me to abandon my nap and give her a lift home. 'Manipulative' wouldn't even begin to describe Valerie.
We have been spending more time than I would like to admit for the past few days. She has become that nagging, annoying yet very fond type of friend that you find yourself missing after a few days apart.
I would be lying if I said she hasn't helped me deal with Candice's absence. Because she has. Although we were becoming closer, Valerie had yet to open up to me and I couldn't help but notice the way she avoided talking about herself– and it was beginning to worry me.
Especially after watching her experience various mood swings only after her phone indicates a new incoming message or call.
Whatever it is she received, it was bothering her to such an extent where she couldn't even talk about it. I noticed the way she tensed up each time her phone chimed, or the guarded look that crossed her face each time I asked if she was okay.
Just last night we were having dinner and she received a call. Which left her in such an emotional state that I had to drive her home– she was in no condition to drive.
So when she called earlier and asked if I could please give her a lift home, I didn't hesitate to agree. I would be there for her, just like she was sticking here for me.
I noticed many students that were loitering around the parking lot gawking at my sleek black car. It's tinted windows preventing them from catching a glimpse inside. I tapped the steering wheel while I waited for Valerie to step out of the school building.
I checked my wristwatch just to make sure I had gotten here on time.
Just as I made a grab for my phone, I saw Valerie stepping out of the school building. She had stepped out alone and she seemed to be in a frenzy. Her face was set in a panicked expression and my worries only seemed to escalate.
Someone was bothering her.
If I had to guess what it was that made her rush out of school in such a hurry – it would be that.
I instantly climbed out of the car and called her over. She seemed to breathe in relief when her eyes landed on me. She more than rushed to get inside the car. I quickly did the same.
Just as I had closed my door and buckled my seatbelt, I heard Valerie sniffle. Instead of asking her if she was okay, I pulled out of the parking lot and drove aimlessly.
After I considered that we were far enough from school for Valerie's own sake, I pulled over. I left my lights flashing as I pushed my door open.
I tried to control my anger as I walked around the car towards the passenger's door.
Why was I so angry? Why was I fuming over the fact that someone was bothering Valerie?
Because I care, that's why.
I pulled her door open, unbuckled her seatbelt and kneeled on the ground. I gently took her into my arms and she instinctively wrapped her arms around me.
