Emerald's POV~

"No mom, you're not listening to me." I groaned in exasperation.

My mother took the glass of wine that I offered her and casually took a sip while her eyes peered at me over the brim of the cup.

"I am listening, honey."

"I'm telling you it isn't like her to just walk out on me like that. All I did was go up to that stage and when I came back she was gone." I furrowed my brows thinking what could have possibly happened the night before to have Candice walk out on me. She couldn't have been that upset about me going along with the bidding date. I mean, she did ask me to do it for the children.

My eyes suddenly widened. "Maybe something happened to her! She could have had an emergency! Something's wrong, I know there is and I'm gonna fix this."

I immediately started looking around for my keys.

"What are you doing?" My mother suddenly asked as she shot out of her seat.

"I'm gonna go look for her." I frantically made hand gestures as I explained it or more like tried. "She left without saying anything. She didn't pick up any of my calls. She hasn't called either!"

My mother set her glass of wine down and standing across from me placed her hands on my shoulders.

"First, you need to relax." She ordered.

"I can't relax when I have no idea what could have happened to Candice!" I bellowed.

"You're not thinking clearly Emerald!" My mom yelled back.

Mother raising her voice?

That was interesting.

The only time my mother ever raised her voice was either when she was annoyed or whenever she was about to tell me something I wouldn't like.

"Oh, but I am." I narrowed my eyes.

"So you believe that you're thinking clearly?" She raised her brows in amusement. "So have you thought about the possibility that leaving could have been her own idea because she was bored?"

"What?" I asked in disbelief.

"Do you think that Candice may have left because she was bored? Maybe because she felt uncomfortable in her surroundings. Maybe felt as if she didn't belong?" My mother pursed her lips and sat on the edge of the sofa's armrest. "You are two completely different people. She may have realized this and decided to leave on her own. Seeing you on that stage and watching you smile that way. Attentively watching and realizing how happy you were. She —"

I chuckled humorlessly.

"Let me stop you right there–" I slowly walked closer towards her. "–mother."

The blank look on her face only confirmed my suspicions.

I let a soft chuckle escape my lips again.

I couldn't believe this.

I turned away from my mother and ran a hand through my hair. I was trying to calm down before attacking my mother with questions and probably harsh words I'd later regret.
