It was around 3 in the morning, and Riley was still up watching her favourite show, Parks and Recreation. It was so hilarious and she loved Chris Pratt. She was just about to watch the next episode when she heard a creak above her. She frowned and took out her headphones, wondering what the hell was up in the attic. It was probably her cat, she always got stuck up there somehow. Riley honestly did not know how she did, but cats can do crazy things. She groaned as she heard the distressed meows of her baby and got out of her bed, the cold air snapping at her bare legs and feet. She quickly put on her long pants and slippers as she picked up her phone and used it as a flashlight. She headed up to the attic and found her cat resting on an old piece of furniture which was perched next to the attic window.
"Come here Luna, baby. How the hell do you get up here?" She said aloud, and attempted to pick up her cat. But, as all cats do, Luna hated being touched. So she jumped out of Riley's arms after giving her a nice scratch and pranced off down the stairs. Riley inhaled sharply as the pain hit her. She clamped onto her arm, dropping her phone in the process. She rolled her eyes as it bounced underneath the chair.
She dropped onto her knees and kneeled down to reach under the chair, from which she pulled out a large, thick book that was covered in dust. Her phone was rested next to it and she shone the light on the book, which was covered in a thick layer of dirt. She wiped the cover and read: Bestiary by Frederick Beacon the II. She was getting cold in the attic, so she shrugged, took the book and went back down to her room, turning all of the lights off as she passed.
She got to her bed and jumped on, closing her laptop and getting rid of all the dust and dirt from the book. She opened it up, and saw all of these images and drawings of different mythical creatures. Each of them had a description and how to kill it. It was so intriguing; she couldn't close it. It would be cool if these creatures were real, the world would be so much more interesting. Imagine living in that world -- imagine being one of these creatures. Wouldn't that be amazing? But sadly, it is not real.
Once she had gotten through halfway, she realized how late it was before deciding to head to bed. So she closed the book, put it under her bed and got under her blankets. She was just about to close her eyes when she heard a very loud, ear piercing scream coming from down the road. She shot up, jumped to her window and looked towards the scream, which was coming from the direction of the hospital. It soon stopped, but sounded like it echoed throughout the whole town.
That scream was so loud and indescribable. They didn't sound like they were in pain... She didn't know what type of scream that was. she suddenly remembered something from the book, so she quickly took it out from under her bed and skimmed through it, looking for the creature that she was thinking of.
Banshee.
" The Legend of the Banshee, which ties back to the origins of Ireland and Wales, is a supernatural creature whose screams are predictions of fore-coming death and/or grief. The Banshee's wail is also very deadly to the ears of others, and can even be the cause of one's death. The scream is also used as a weapon, with the sound waves so powerful that they can cause disruption to any objects and throw them back a short distance. A Banshee often finds herself at the scenes of death by subconsciously following the voices that she hears inside of her head. If the banshee cannot control her powers and/or urges, she will not be able to control her scream, and as a result, kill everything within ear shot of her. She also may slowly turn mentally ill/insane as a result of the constant voices inside of her head if not controlled and mastered. "
Well, that person's scream certainly didn't kill anyone within ear shot, or everyone would have been dead. Is someone going to die? Wait, what am I thinking? Riley thought. There's no way that that person was a banshee, they don't even exist! It even says in the book that it's a legend. It will always be a legend.
Maybe she was just tired. After all, she hadn't slept in a pretty long time. Well, longer than she was used to, anyway. She would check it out tomorrow. She guessed that reading books like these at night make you see stuff that aren't there. She skimmed through the illustrations of most common symbols of the supernatural, and came across the same three swirl symbol that she took from Derek. She read the description of it, having found out that was called a triskele.
Each spiral represents three different things; the sun, the moon, the truth. These three things are ones that cannot long be hidden. This ancient Celtic symbol aides young wolves or angered supernatural in calming themselves; drawing, tracing or chanting the three items help to calm and ground them and helps to prevent them from turning.
That can't be right. If that was true, then Isaac may actually be telling the truth. He couldn't have been, what was she thinking? She was just tired, that was all. She put the book underneath her bed and closed her eyes, the scream still echoing in her head.
