While Riley's mother went out shopping, Riley interrogated her dad about where her mother put that metal box. She turned the attic upside down trying to look for it, and attempted to go into their room but her dad stayed in bed sulking after her burned lunch.
"Are you sure you don't know anything about it?" She asked as she sat on the bed where her dad was lying with a book in his hand.
"I'm sure. I don't really recall her with a metal box." He replied, and Riley sighed.
"What about a key? Do you know anything about a key?" She asked, and he sadly shook his head, but then looked like he remembered something. "What?"
"I do remember hearing her muttering something to herself while I was on the toilet. Something about a key being safe but I just thought she was talking about the book she was reading. By the way, I saw all of the books in your room, good job! Reading is much better for you than being on your phone all the time. Keep it up darling." He explained, and smiled warmly at her. She smiled back and looked around, feeling around under the bed with her feet to see if she put it under there. Where would her mum keep a key?
Riley got up and went into their bathroom, pretending to need to use it so she could look through it. She turned the fan on so she had a bit of noise going on so he wouldn't think of anything suspicious. She searched the cupboards, the wall shelves, behind the toilet and even in the shower, but there was nothing there. She sighed and picked up a toiletry bag that was perched on the ground next to the sink and looked through it, tipping out some of its contents onto the bench. The objects jumped off the bench and fell onto the floor, the large brush hitting Riley's foot. She inhaled sharply as she grabbed onto her foot and crouched onto the ground, leaning against the cupboard underneath the sink. She tried to keep quiet so her dad wouldn't hear her funny behaviour. He probably thought that she was taking a massive number 2 by the sounds she were making.
After a few minutes of calming her foot down, she picked up all of the various objects (things like old makeup, small toothbrushes and travel pack sized beauty products) and placed them back into the bag, but her eye spotted a piece of small string that had wrapped itself around one of the slits of the drain that was embedded in the tiles on the ground. She ran her finger over it as she tried to pull on it, but it was very tight. She looked down into the drain, but it was too dark, so she shone a light from her phone down into and saw something dangling from it.
She put her phone away and twisted the drain so it unlocked. She pulled it straight up, and saw the string had a small, old key attached to the end of it.
Jackpot.
Now all she needed was the actual box, but where would it be?
