"That was the most disgusting thing I have ever consumed. I might throw up." She groaned, breathing heavily. It tasted like dirt, vanilla and lemon all mixed in with stale bread and vomit. Weird combination, but that's what it tasted like to Riley.

"Here, I'll bring you some water." He said, and picked a new glass from the shelf and filled it up with some clean water. She took it gladly and sipped on it, feeling better after a few minutes.

"Please don't ever give me mistletoe again." She informed, and Deaton chuckled.

"Of course not. Now, there's one more thing..." He trailed off, and Riley groaned.

"What else is there? Don't you have enough information to make a conclusion?" She nagged, and Deaton shook his head.

"No, if this does not affect you, then you are definitely what I expect." He replied, and Riley looked at him weirdly.

"Why didn't you just start with that one?" She asked, and Deaton smiled.

"It's not as simple as that. Because your body has absorbed all of the poisons and nothing has happened to you, this one confirms what you are. I needed all three to not work." He explained, and Riley understood. He just worded it wrong.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket and she checked the time, which read 3pm. School was finished. Her lockscreen was full of messages from Isaac, also one from Scott. She felt like she had to text Isaac back, because by the looks of things, he was very worried.

She texted him back saying that she was okay. Scott had sent a message saying to meet up at his house as soon as she could.

"I've got to go to Scott's house, it seems important. What is the last thing that you need to confirm?" She asked, looking at Deaton. He was wearing a surgical mask, and Riley looked at him in confusion. She looked around, the air suddenly looking steamy. "Why are you wearing a mask?"

Deaton reached towards the table and turned off a vaporizer that Riley had just noticed and took out the contents. He walked over to the windows and opened them, tipping the contents of the vaporizer out. He turned on the ceiling fan, trying to get rid of the steam.

"I just vaporized a highly poisonous plant called Deri, or commonly known as the Derius Flower, that is used to poison humans and all types of supernatural creatures. It comes from the supernatural creature called a Mandremate, which originates from Columbia and is quite uncommon. You're a Shield; you are immune." He concluded, and Riley frowned.

"A Shield? Of what?" She asked, as she got down from the table.

"A shield of the supernatural. You have the power to resist any supernatural creature's powers or, as seen with the Kanima, poisons. They do not affect you. They cannot sense you. You are the most rare type of supernatural, so rare that it only occurs in a few bloodlines. Only pureblood lines located in small regions such as Beacon Hills have this recessive gene. Still, it only occurs in a few generations. I have never met or came across a shield before. I've only read about them and heard about them through other people. You are very special, Riley. I doubt you would meet anyone the same as you." He finally revealed what he was thinking. Riley was shocked and confused the entire time. How can she be a shield? How is it so rare? How could she, Riley, be the one who was the shield? She couldn't understand it... The possibility of her being a shield is one in a million. Why her? Why not her mum or something?

"Wow, that's um... That's something. Well, at least now I know what I am, I guess." She mumbled, and gripped her phone. "Thank you for taking time out of your day to help me find out who I really am."

"It's a pleasure, really. Not many people can say that they've met a shield in person. Any information you need, just give me a call or come visit okay? You'd better go to Scott." He said, and Riley smiled and nodded.

"I will, definitely. Thank you again, really. You've given me the answer I was looking for, for a very long time."
