Riley was driven back to her house by a police officer while Isaac stayed at the station. He told Riley that he'd come over later tonight. She passed her mum in the kitchen and put her foot on the first step of the staircase before her mum called her name.
She walked back into the kitchen and saw her mum scrolling on her phone.
"Yes?" She asked, not moving from the archway with her bag on her shoulder.
"How was school today?" She asked, looking up from her phone and locking it. Wow, she must really want to talk to Riley. She sat down at the island and indicated for Riley to sit across from her. She sat, almost reluctantly.
"It was okay. How was whatever you did today?" She replied, taking an apple from the counter.
"Just more work as usual. Where were you this afternoon? I tried calling but you didn't pick up." She said, and Riley saw her eyes drifting towards her phone in front of her.
"I went to the police station. You know Isaac, right? His dad was found dead in an alleyway." She responded, and her mum's bushy eyebrows raised.
"Coach Lahey? What a shame, he was a nice man." She said, and Riley stiffened her jaw. He was not a nice man.
"Yep." She mumbled, not wanting to get into a fight with her. It was late, and she was too tired to argue with anyone.
"Why did you go to the station for?" She asked, and mindlessly put her hand on top of her phone. Riley watched her long thin fingers tap on the screen, as she made a weak attempt at grasping the phone. It was like she was fighting herself; she wanted to back to her phone, but she always felt obligated to talk to Riley.
"I was questioned about it because I'm friends with Isaac. Where's dad?" She asked, putting the topic to an end. She didn't feel like talking about this anymore, she already felt bad for Isaac.
"Dad is at the office - something about an emergency meeting." She shrugged, and picked up her phone. She didn't turn it on though, which was surprising.
"Cool." Riley mumbled, and got up. She stopped at the archway, and hesitated before turning back to her mum. She was on her phone, of course, but looked up when Riley stood there.
"Do you want to come to a lacrosse game coming up soon?" She asked, kind of hoping that she would say yes but also hoping she'd say no. Riley might as well try to involve her in her life. She smiled, checked her phone and nodded.
"Well, I'll have to check my schedule-" She paused, looking at Riley's ever-growing disappointed expression. "-But sure. Of course." She smiled, and Riley nodded.
"Okay, cool. I'll tell you more about the details when it comes closer." She said, and went to her room.
Isaac knocked on Riley's front door at around 11pm, but she didn't know because her headphones were in, which were playing some heavy tunes. Her mum answered the door, and let Isaac into her room.
She heard her door close and looked over her shoulder, seeing him standing there. She took her headphones out and stood up, walking over to him and giving him a hug.
"How was it? What happened?" She asked, and they sat down on her bed.
"It was fine, they told me to stay in town for a while though." He replied, looking at the ground. Wait, his brother was gone, his mother was gone and now his dad was... He had no one. How was he going to look after himself?
"You can stay here if you want. I doubt my parents would even notice." She offered, but he smiled and shook his head.
"Don't worry about it, I found a place." He waved her off, and she nodded. She was a bit hurt that he hadn't asked her first, but she understood.
"Where are you staying?" Riley asked, and he hesitated.
"An apartment." He said shortly. He got up and walked to her shelf full of books, where he scanned the binding and took a book out. Riley remained sitting on her bed, as she mindlessly stroked her fluffy blanket.
"Are you staying there alone or do you have a roommate?" She asked again, wanting to get as much information from him as she could.
"Um, yeah." He replied, still with no explanation. She sighed and walked over to him, taking the book about constellations out of his hands. She put it on the table next the shelf and looked at him in the eyes.
"Why won't you tell me anything?" She asked, frowning at his light blue eyes. Funny, she thought they were darker than that.
"Fine, I'm living with Derek Hale." He said loudly, and she pursed her lips as she watched him walk around.
"You didn't have to yell, I was right in front of you." Riley muttered, and he looked at her from across the room. She said that pretty quietly, how did he hear her?
"Look, Riley, there are some things that are happening that you don't understand, okay? And you might never understand them. Just please stay out of trouble." He said, then made a beeline for the door. She widened her eyes as he shut the door behind him, leaving her alone in her room. What was he talking about? What things? She grabbed her slip on shoes and ran out of the door, down the stairs and out of the house. She ran down the driveway and to the gate, looking everywhere as she went. She opened the gate, going outside. She looked in every direction, not seeing Isaac anywhere. How could he be so fast? She was right behind him, how could he have disappeared?
