Mikey looked at me with pleading eyes. His hands were clasped in front of him as he begged me to let come.
“Fine, you can come,” I said with a sigh.
Mikey jumped up and did a little happy dance. “Yes! Finally! Let’s go.” I guess he hadn’t thought that I would actually leave him at home, I think he expected I would take him with me.
“Get your disguise and I’ll meet you downstairs,” I told him. He nodded and disappeared to go and get his wig.
“I think you are the only person in the whole country capable of bossing around the king without him plotting to kill you,” Diego said from next to me. He was our chauffer again today. As much as I didn’t like using him so much, we couldn’t exactly use any one else without spilling the secret of what we were doing.
I blushed a little at his comment. “That’s not true,” I said crossing my arms over my chest.
“Yeah it is,” Diego said shaking his head.
“How do you know he isn’t planning my murder?” I asked him as we headed down the stairs.
Diego shot me a look. “If he was, would he have gone to all that trouble to get you back when you were evicted?”
“Yes! To throw us off!”
“How about all those looks he gives you? Anyone planning someone else death wouldn’t stare at them like that.”
“What looks? He doesn’t stare,” I said confidently.
“Uh never mind,” Diego said quickly. We were at the car now.
“Come on! Tell me!”
“No, I can't, sorry.”
“Diego, please?” I begged again.
“Is, I am not going to tell you. I promised I wouldn’t.”
“Fine.”
We waited in silence until Mikey came out of the castle. His wig on and his coloured contacts in. It wasn’t best disguise ever, but Mikey was a king who rarely ever left his castle, his people wouldn’t expect to see him out and about anyways.
When we got to the huge grocery store in downtown, my friends were already there.
“Here are your lists,” I said passing them each a list that I had made up that morning. This way we would get the right amount of everything and nothing would be doubled. If something was doubled, we would be out a lot of money.
“This must be a mistake,” Mikey said looking up from his list.
“How?” I asked.
“This says I have to buy over two hundred boxes of soda crackers,” he said. I nodded. “What? Why so many?”
“Well, from the data we’ve collected, there are about eight hundred people living in that area. So about two hundred something families. Each family will get a box,” I explained.
“And we have enough for all of this?” he asked. I whipped out the card Dad had given me last night.
“The discount card. We will get forty percent off on everything,” I said with a smile. “This is the card Dad uses when he buys food for the castle,” I said quieter.
“And they have enough here for us to find everything?” Liam asked.
I nodded. “This is like a food warehouse store. Made for bulk stuff. Besides, I called a head and told them that we would be coming. So all you need to do when you find an item is find a person who works here and have them put it aside for us.”
