Last night before Is went back to her apartment, we decided that it was best to tell Uncle Harold about the fake cheques. I wasn’t sure about it, but Is had managed to convince me that there was no way my uncle would be allowing that much money just to disappear. He had done all of the things he had to destroy the country to make the amount of money he did.

So I decided that I would go and talk to him right after breakfast. It would make us even later for the build than we were usually, but it was important. And the sooner we got this done, the better.

“Just take the cheque and sit down in front of him. Make sure he is watching you while you fill out a cheque, make it for a really small amount. Then ask him if that’s good enough to pay for something outrageous, like building a house or something. He’ll say no and then pull out the one inside and right in a different amount,” Is told me once again when breakfast was done. We were down the hall from Uncle Harolds office. I already knew everything she was telling me, but she was sending me in alone and wanted to be sure I wouldn’t mess up.

“I know Izzy,” I said. As much as I liked being close to her, I did not appreciate the way she was gripping my shirt in her hands. It had started out gentle when she started her rant, but as she spoke, her hands had started to fist my shirt. Now it was more like she was trying to shake me.

“And make sure to rip up the cheques after, just in case,” Is cautioned me.

“I know, I know,” I said carefully removing her hands from my shirt, making sure to keep them firmly in mine so she couldn’t start shaking me again.

“I’ll be fine, I promise. I’ll call for you if I need help.” I kissed her quickly. “Let me go. We don’t want to get to Sorsa too late.”

Is nodded immediately and stepped away from me, pushing me slightly towards the door.

“Go, I’ll wait right here for you,” she commanded. Should I be upset that I couldn’t convince my girlfriend to do things, but as soon as I mentioned the people of a nearby town she agreed?

I pecked her lips once more before turning and entering my uncle’s office.

I sat down right across from him at the table and took one of the cheques from my pocket. My uncle watched me with mild interest as I started to fill it out.

“Something I can help you with my boy?” Uncle Harold asked. I suppressed the urge to flinch at the words ‘my boy’. I was never his boy and I never would be.

“I was thinking of building a house on the grounds for Chef Dermen and Isabelle to live in so they have their own place to live in as a family,” I lied smoothly. It was something I was thinking about, but I wasn’t sure if it was the best idea. I didn’t want to single out Chef Dermen as the only employee to get their own house on castle grounds.

“Will this be enough to cover the cost?” I asked writing in $100 in the amount box.

My uncle looked at it. “No of course not,” he said with a small laugh. “You are in charge of the build in Sorsa, surely you now that is nowhere near being enough.”

I nodded thoughtfully like I was actually thinking about what he had said. Then I managed to plaster a sheepish smile onto my lips.

“Oh, yes, you’re right. I’ll just change it.” I started to open up the cheque like Is had showed me.

“To change it you need a new cheque,” my uncle said slowly like I was a child. “You can’t just-” His words were cut off when he noticed the new cheque in my hands.
